Nepeta faassenii 'Select Blue' (Catmint) is a fantastic xeric perennial with dramatic lavender-blue flowers and handsome gray-green foliage. A recurrent bloomer, the first flush of flowers comes in late spring, and again later in summer. A long-lived, easily grown perennial, this is an excellent plant for beginners.
15" tall x 18" wide. Nepeta faassenii 'Select Blue' (Catmint) was originally chosen for introduction because of its noticeably bluer flowers than is typical of most Nepeta. 'Select Blue' Catmint has become a cornerstone in many xeriscapes because of its cold hardiness, ease-of-cultivation, longevity and extended period of bloom. The first flush of flower comes in late spring. When deadheaded promptly, you will enjoy a second flush of blooms in late summer. Out of flower, the neat mound of foliage has a pleasing fragrance, texture, and gray-green color. Impervious to browsing animals, it grows easily in most soil types including clay. Is a sterile plant that will not reseed and make a weed of itself like other more common catmint. Cut back just above ground-level (about 3") in mid-spring. Shear off faded flowers in June to re-bloom. (Cutting propagated.)
Planting & Care
Tips for Growing Catmint (Nepeta)
The Catmints (Nepeta) are some of our best garden perennials being long-lived, very easy-to-grow, resistant to browsing animals (deer and rabbits). Catmints are an excellent source of nectar for honeybees and butterflies and are a great beginner's perennial.
Many species are excellent in the xeric (low-water garden) and they grow well in a wide range of soil types, including dry clay. They grow well with at least a half day of sun, but flower best in full sun. We recommend planting only sterile hybrids and avoiding any Nepeta that are propagated from seed. The seed-grown Catmints can be aggressively weedy, spreading themselves throughout the garden and crowding out neighboring perennials.
The varieties we offer are outstanding, sterile (no seeds), long-blooming varieties:
Nepeta faassenii 'Select Blue' - This low growing, non-spreading plant has beautiful lavender-blue flowers. In early summer after the first flush of flowers have faded, shear off the flower spikes just above the foliage to get the plants to re-bloom again later in the summer.
Nepeta 'Walker's Low' - has showy deep blue flowers on tall flower spikes. 'Walker's Low' grows as a neat, non-suckering, well behaved plant and blooms for many months from late spring into mid-summer. Deadheading (shearing off the faded flower spikes just above the foliage) will encourage stronger re-blooming.

"This blue nepeta has gotten really big! I wasn't sure anything would happen in the first year. I recommend hardening them off after shipping. I did this for about half of the plants and they have done better. This plant likes full Sun. The ones I put in part shade are doing well but not as big. Only a few blooms but I wasn't expecting any so soon."
— Audrey (5/5)
Happy plant and the bees love it!
"We planted this plant as part of our bee apiary on our campus. It is attractive to honeybees and native pollinators and growing nicely!"
— Cpb (5/5)
Stalled out
"Blooms and growth seen quickly, but now just stalled out."
— Sam (4/5)
LOVE THEM!
"SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST I HAVE ORDERED PLANTS ONLINE. THEY USUALLY ARRIVE HALF DEAD AND DIE I THE FIRST YEAR. I SAID NEVER AGAIN. HOWEVER, WHEN I SAW THESE, I LOVED THE COLORS, SUN AND WATER REQUIREMENTS, SO I DECIDED TO GIVE IT ONE MORE TRY. THESE PLANTS ARRIVED HEALTHY, IN A DECENT SIZE CONTAINER, TOOK FANTASTIC, ARE GROWING BEAUTIFULLY AND THRIVING. PRICE WAS FAIR ALSO. I WAS WORRIED BECUASE EVERYTHING ELSE I USED IN THE SAME SPOTS DIED BECAUSE I GET STRONG AFTERNOON SUN TILL DUSK. THESE ARE JUST PERFECT SO FAR."
— BHINNJ (5/5)
Growing well
"Plants arrived in good shape, at an appropriate timing for my area. Once planted, they have each taken hold quickly and are looking very healthy"
— LanderSage (5/5)
These are along my driveway with other flowers from you.
"I planted them in my driveway border and they have really filled out. They are perfect for the sandy soil and I mixed them with many others of your plants. I am in South Carolina and they are thriving!"
— Darlene (5/5)
Takes a while, but once it takes. . .
"I received this in the fall two years ago and the plant was pretty small on arrival. So I potted it and kept it inside all winter while it grew. We live in a difficult northwestern climate - very dry with hot days, cold nights, and a limited growing season. The year I planted it, I was concerned it wouldn't make it because there was hardly any growth. But this year it has taken off and is covered with beautiful blue flowers."
— Susan (5/5)
Amazing ground cover
"Although I read that this plant was recommended for sandy soil, I needed something for a rocky clay hillside. The results have been gratifying. Three plants created a mass of blue that keeps blooming in 95 degree June/July weather."
— Buzzbea (5/5)
Easy care, but needs trimming
"I planted about 5 of these cat mints last spring. They all did well with very little care. However, I did not trim them back, as instructions said to do after 1st blooming, mostly because I had an injured arm. So they got more leggy and straggly than I would like. I'm not sure they bloomed quite as heavily as the photos show, but they were great for areas where little else would grow so easily. Next year I will be more diligent at trimming them back."
— Dirt D. (4/5)
Thrives on neglect
"I love catmints and this one has thrived through deer stomping, gophers, very little water and a steep hillside location. It just continues to grow and bloom. I love it!"
— Happy G. (5/5)
