Wild Four O'clock is a magnificent native wildflower that blooms all summer with magenta-pink flowers that open in the afternoon. A perennial with huge, deep roots, it needs no extra water once established. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
15-18" tall x 48-72" wide (seed propagated). In its full afternoon glory, Wild Four O'clock has few rivals. A mature plant will have hundreds of magenta-pink flowers open at one time! This short grass prairie wildflower is one of our most xeric species with an enormous, deep-growing taproot. Plant it in any soil, even clay, where it will get plenty of sun and heat. Once established, it grows best when given very little extra irrigation. Semi-succulent foliage
Planting & Care
Mirabilis multiflora (Wild Four O'clock) - a widespread native wildflower found from Texas east to California. Resistant to browsing deer and rabbits. Pollinated by hawk moths.
Preferred growing conditions
Plant in any low fertility ("lean") soil including clay positioned in full sun.
Mulch with gravel or not at all.
Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, it needs no supplemental water except in time of drought (when a monthly deep watering is all that's needed).
Deadheading is not needed as this is a naturally ever-blooming species.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
Special comments
Mirablis has a huge fleshy tap root once established and can't be transplanted. Plant where they stay dry. Excessive water encourages vigorous growth with no flowers.
First frost in fall turns the entire plant crispy and brown. Stems detach from the root and should be discarded or composted.

What a Phenomenal Plant!
"What a phenomenal plant! Planted it in the spring of 2025 and exceeded all expectations of what you would expect from a 1st year planting growing up to 6 feet across and blooming like crazy. It is now June 18, 2026. I just measured it approxmate height at ~ 42" and an easy 6 feet across. It's just starting to bloom. I have it on drip irrigation so it gets watered a couple of times a week. Absolutely one of my favorite plants and requiring little to no care."

Exceeded Expectations
"Water semi daily in the Western Colorado desert the first summer. Full sun. No water after that. Hardy and can be gigantic."
— michael k. (5/5)
Wonderful experience
"They are absolutely gorgeous! They are surrounded by rock. They completely disappear in our winters and are slow to wake up in the spring even into June."
— Phyllis M. (5/5)
Too soon to tell
"I put this in an area where it should do well and fill in some blank spots. The roots were huge but the leaves didn't last long…it is fall and I'm hoping this is normal and it comes back in the spring."
— Pete (3/5)
Not sure about ordering again.
"I ordered 5 4 o'clock plants to put in a huge perennial bed and I'm in zone4-5, front range Colorado. One was dead which was replaced and soon after most of the others look terrible. They are front and center in my huge corner lot and I had high hopes that they would thrive in this sunny place. I truly hope they perform eventually. I really hope they work as I have seen how beautiful they are full grown."
— Gardengurl (2/5)
Just not thriving
"I bought 3. They were delivered in April. Followed directions upon delivery and for planting. Warrantied one. Not sure it will make it. Other two don't look to be growing, and even look to be withering. Pictures are as of June."
— B (1/5)
Did not survive 😞
"None of them survived despite using yum yum mix, watering in the fall, and sufficient snow over the winter. Not sure why, but I'm pretty disappointed."
— Coranchgirl (1/5)
Wild Four O'clock attempts
"I bought 3 of these plants in the fall, and only one survived. This spring I bought 3 more and have only 2 left that are alive but they are looking quite sad. I know they grow well in Denver, Colorado as my neighbor has a large beautiful one several years old that she bought by High Country. I think that the small starter plants from High Country are very delicate and difficult to start if full sun in Denver."
— Heather (2/5)
Great Xeric Native Plant
"Back when I lived in Boise, I planted several of these in early fall along a road in an area that did not have irrigation, and they did not disappoint. Clean-up is quick and easy if you wait until after a hard freeze. They die back to the taproot and often easily disconnect at the taproot after the plant goes dormant, and you can ball up the entire plant and dispose of it. Although the first sprouts don't typically show until mid-June, they end up growing about 2' high and 6-8' in diameter. They require some occasional watering the first year, but after that they don't require any supplemental water at all. I currently have some on order for my new house in Arizona."
— Native L. (5/5)
Absolutely. Wonderful plant
"I received the plants last April 2023 but couldn't plant them until mid July of 2023. Plant is amazing and next summer I will reduce the water it gets. But the three plants are huge. At least 8 feet across and lovely blossoms. Hummingbirds love it as do the sphinx months and bees as well"
