Marrubium rotundifolium Silver Edged Horehound is one our very best xeric groundcovers for poor soil areas with hot, sunny growing conditions. The soft felted leaves are green with a bright silver underside that curls up to give the leaves a silver edge. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
2009 Plant Select Winner 10" tall x 18" wide (cutting propagated). Native to high, dry areas of Turkey, this is sure to become a very popular addition to the Western xeric garden. The soft felted leaves are green on top and edged in white with the backs of the leaves also woolly white. The flowers are insignificant and should be sheared off to expose the evergreen, ornamental foliage. A vigorous grower, this plant does well in lean, well-drained soils, requiring little water once established. NOT RECOMMENDED for planting in regions with HOT, HUMID summer weather; the woolly foliage will "melt" from the humidity. A fine ground cover for under planting Caryopteris 'First Choice' (where it will accentuate the gray-green foliage) and blue or gray leafed grasses and perennials, to add contrasting texture and color.
Planting & Care
Marrubium (Horehound) - a large group of flowering plants native to the Old World (North Africa, Europe, and Asia). Some have showy flowers while others are grown for ornamental foliage. Resistant to browsing deer and rabbits.
Preferred growing conditions
Plant in a fast-draining, infertile soil with full sun. In arid climates, it can be grown in dry clay. Mulch with gravel, pine needles, or not at all.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
Deadheading is recommended to prevent re-seeding and keep the ornamental foliage fresh and tidy after flowering is done.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
Special comments
Cut back to green stems in early to mid-spring.
These are low-care perennials that don't like rich soil or a lot of water; this makes the plants leggy, prone to flopping, and can shorten their lifespan; grow hard and on the dry side.

Didn't return in Year 2 after a great Year 1
"I am in Boulder, CO (Zone 6a). This plant really took off and looked very healthy after I planted it last spring, but it didn't come back this year. I see the crown, but there are no signs of life. We had a dry winter, but I did give it and all my other plants some water throughout the winter."
— Mike W. (2/5)
Tolerant of neglect and aesthetically pleasing
"Have patience- my wimpy plants purchased 3 years ago have matured into a thick carpet of horehound. My yard has a brick like consitency with a bunny infestation, yet the horehound is thriving. I keep buying more. I watered them the first year, and now only in long stretches without precipitation."

Sunny slope groundcover
"I bought several of these for a south facing slope about 5 years ago. They've filled in really nicely. They keep the steep slope in place. The bees love them. And they don't require much water. I came back for more after I started working on the west facing slope in my yard!"
— Gulia (5/5)
Great plant for a dry area!
"This plant is very happily growing in a tough dry area."
— Garden G. (5/5)
Gorgeous and hardy groundcover
"I've had this in my garden for four years now and it's spectacular. It grew to about 24"" square, bigger than I was expecting. As advertised, it's very xeric. It survived recordbreaking heat last summer without any watering through those hottest months and came back big and healthy this spring. (Note that the plant was 3 years old and well-established before then. ) Now that I've cleared out my lawn, I'm buying more of these for the areas that rarely get water. The silver is very striking."
— Lin (5/5)
The name is a bit funky but it's definitely not!
"It's my favorite for the high arid, windy, and overall wild climate of Laramie. Space it correctly. As you can see in my attached image, it was crowded and was battling the adjacent plants for space."
— Sid M. (5/5)
2 out of 3 ain't bad
"I ordered three of these in the spring, shipped to Albuquerque. One arrived virtually dead and the other were sad looking but still viable. I planted all three. The virtually dead one died completely but the other two rallied and now in late summer look lush and very attractive, tripled in size. This is a gorgeous plant, so 5 stars for the plant but I took off a star for the DOA plant."
— JoJo (4/5)
Thriving in Rock Garden
"I bought a couple of these last year, and not only did they survive the winter at 8000 ft, they really thrived and look healthy and happy this year. The bees live them! I bought several more this year and though it takes time for them to become established, I am expecting similar results. Great plant!"

Silver Edged Horehound (Marrubium)
"HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS PARTICULAR PLANT FOR SOME TIME. sO HAPPY hc gARDENS CARRY IT AS IT PRODUCES AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE BORDER!!!!!"
— NORMA, G. (5/5)
Great plant for xeriscapes
"Great groundcover for dry areas. Watered the first year only. Very attractive with silver edge. Very low-growing. Tough. Spreads after established. Likes poor soil. Snapped back after horrible hail two years ago and this year. Deer leave it alone. Could not ask for more in a plant here in Colorado. This year it has had no additional water during a horrible drought year. I have ordered more twice."
