Description

Hyssopus officinalis ssp. aristadus (Blue Hyssop) is fragrant herb traditionally used for brewing tea and as a medicinal plant. Hyssop is right at home in the ornamental garden. Its deep green foliage and dark-blue flower spikes are a delight in mid-summer, when many other plants are looking beat from the heat. Extremely attractive to bees and butterflies, it is a wonderful companion plant to pink and orange Agastache. This is a wonderful lavender substitute for colder climates. Cut back to green foliage in early to mid-spring. 18-24" tall x 12-15" wide. (Seed propagated.)

Tips On Growing Hyssopus (Hyssop)

Hyssopus (Hyssop) is a group of Old World herbs with blue flowers and aromatic foliage that is highly resistant to browsing animals and a favorite nectar source for bees of many types.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in a fast-draining, infertile soil with full sun. Don't plant in clay soils.
  • Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading helps to keep the foliage looking tidy, but may not extend the flowering season.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.

Special comments:

  • Hyssopus can be short-lived perennials and should be encouraged to re-seed themselves by leaving some seed heads on the plants and mulching with small diameter gravel mulch.
  • Leave standing over the winter and trim off any winter killed stem tips, but don't cut the plant back to ground-level as this will kill the plant.

Excellent plant - repeat purchaser

"Third time purchasing these plants. Have given away to friends who have admired them and both report their flower bushes are still thriving. Live in Atlanta and these take a beating in the summer/winter. I lightly trim mine after they die late fall but have found regrowth on new stems and old alike. I would say takes about 2 seasons to reach its full potential. Bees are CRAZY for them and they have a pleasant medicinal mint smell to them. Round out nicely about 2 feet all around so don't crowd them in. Nice mid-height plant in garden bed or container but they prefer ground IMO. In Atlanta they bloom May-October into November if still warmer."

Totally unscathed by the NTexas heat wave of 2023

"The Blue Hyssop did not come with my Pre-Planned Jumbo Waterwise Garden. I added some to fill in the gaps. This is the only plant to survive totally unscathed in the DFW North Texas heat wave of 2023. We have had 47 days of 100 + degree days so far. I love this plant! My garden was planted in June."
