Geranium viscosissimum (Sticky Purple Geranium) is a native wildflower that blooms continuously from late spring to late summer with small pink-lavender to purple flowers. A pollinator and bird favorite, this deciduous perennial has many-toothed, bright green leaves that turn red in fall providing even more interest. Happy in a full sun to part shade location, it is easy to grow and mixes well into a perennial bed or woodland setting.

Description

Native to Western North America, Geranium viscosissimum (Sticky Purple Geranium) is pollinated by butterflies, native bees, and beneficial insects. In addition to being a pollinator favorite, the seed capsules are enjoyed by birds and small mammals. At 2-3 feet tall and not fussy about soil type, its floating saucer-shaped pink flowers are beautifully contrasted by the bright green foliage and are edible as a garnish or salad addition. Water thrifty once established, it thrives in a sun to part shade location and it is not fussy about soil type, needing only good drainage. Attractive throughout the growing season, it is essential for a native plant collection or sustainable garden setting.

Tips For Growing Geranium (Cranesbill)

Geranium (Cranesbill) is a large genus of annual and herbaceous perennials found worldwide. The greatest number of ornamental species are native to Europe and South Africa. They are not to be confused with the common bedding geranium which is actually a Pelargonium.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in compost enriched soils including clay. Position in full sun to partial shade.  Mulch with commonly available mulch materials.
  • Geraniums like moderate soil moisture and should be watered regularly when conditions are dry.
  • Deadheading is not necessary. Many modern hybrids are naturally long blooming.
  • Fertilize in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.

Special comments:

  • Geraniums don't need to be divided. The width of larger growing varieties can be controlled by cutting off the side shoots from the crown.
  • Cut back in late fall after hard frost or wait until early spring.

a good start

"I was on the border about getting this plant because there is very little information about it. I didn't find anything on youtube, and there was some limited information on the national forest site. It is an interesting native plant. So I got this plant and it was a small thing, but it did well in a hot sunny area crowded by a few other things. It showed a few nice flowers, more than I expected for a subtile plant like a geranium. This year it has sprung up and is looking strong. So far it is no Roxanne of Johnson's blue for size and blooms, but I am happy with my purchase."
