A carefree little succulent native plant, Phemeranthus calycinum 'Judith's Favorite' (Fame Flower) has quarter-sized rose-violet flowers that open in the afternoon heat. A willing re-seeder, these little plants gently colonize their garden site and bloom all summer. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).

Description

10-12" tall x 15-18" wide (seed propagated). Originally brought into cultivation by New Mexico landscaper, nurserywoman and author Judith Phillips, this selection of the species is remarkable for its vigor and its fabulously showy display of quarter-sized rose-violet flowers. It thrives in full sun growing on poor sandy/rocky soils. Blooming starts in early summer and continues through early fall. The flowers open in the afternoon, so it's always a treat to come home in later afternoon to clouds of its intensely colored flowers dancing in the breeze.

Planting Tips for Judith's Favorite Fame Flower - (Phemeranthus calycinum or Talinum)

Waking up from dormancy: These perennial succulents won’t begin to grow until warm summer weather has arrived, and will be shipped dormant through the early spring months. The succulent overwinters as a swollen stem, at or just below the soil surface, and will have dormant buds. The root ball is fragile when the plants are dormant. Moisten the root ball lightly before transplanting and handle carefully. Do not scratch out the root ball. If some of the soil falls away from the root ball that’s OK. Go ahead and transplant when dormant and it is still cold outside. (There is no advantage to holding the dormant plant in its pot either indoors or outdoors.) Water the plant thoroughly only once after putting it in the ground. To prevent rot, don’t start to water more regularly until the weather warms and the plants begin to grow actively.

Tough little plant!

"What a great plant thus far. Wouldn’t say it was the most beautiful specimen when it arrived- one main plant with several broken pieces. I evaluated the broken pieces and saw just a little green actively growing tips. A closer inspection and I saw advantageous roots barely sprouting out of the broken segments, so I decided what the heck I’ll plant them all and hope for the best. When I tell you, what a tough little plant! Truly within a day or two, the main plant AND little pieces were already established, and I noticed growth of the tiny lives after a day. They are all alive and well, and growing very vigorously for only being planted a couple weeks. 10/10 would recommend!"

"I put it in a windows box. It Bloomed all summer in a very tricky location (hot dry partial shade), with occasional watering. Loved the long slender stalks that ended in delicate hot pink flowers. It's gone down for the fall now so I'm excited to see how it does next year!"

Got a dry trouble spot in full sun?

"Buy this plant. Honestly. This summer has been hot and we are down about half the precipitation we generally get (less than 6 inches from June 1st through Aug 31st) and this plant has been a blooming machine. The color is bright and stands out well above the succulent-looking foliage. I will admit I am concerned about its ability to overwinter in my wetter climate (SE Mich), but the zone hardiness looks like that won't be the issue. My plans are to take cuttings as well as covering the original plants with a cone over the winter. If it doesn't make it, and my cuttings are unsuccessful (which will be unlikely as I've already rooted a few) I'm sure it will be in my cart once again next spring. . ."
