(16" tall x 16" wide)'Little Rascal' Buckwheat (Eriogonum allenii) is a stunning addition to the xeric landscape with its dome of bright yellow flower clusters that cover the compact growing plant throughout the summer months. Flowers age to a bronze-orange color. Eriogonum allenii is a rare native species from the mountain of Virginia and West Virginia, also known as Shale Barrens Buckwheat; the breeders from Jelitto Seed in Germany have created a superb cultivar. It can be grown across most of the US because it is more moisture tolerant than western species. Suitable for dry slopes, shallow soils, rock gardens, xeriscape, roof gardens, dry flower beds, and large containers. Recommended companion plants include Bouteloua 'Blonde Ambition' (Blue Grama Grass), Asclepias tuberosa (Orange Butterfly Weed) and Amorpha canescens (Leadplant).

"I had a dry area with poor soil that had resisted my attempts to improve it, so after a couple of other plants failed there, I tried buckwheat and it's doing marvelously. The flowers are prettier than I thought they would be. This June was a real drought here, which they weathered well especially for new plantings."
