36" tall x 24" wide. Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower) is a favorite wildflower that blooms heavily for many weeks in late summer. Echinacea purpurea is invaluable for brightening the garden in the dog days of summer. Purple Coneflower is easily grown in a wide range of soil types, it also grows well in clay. Echinacea is a superb companion plant for a wide range of perennials including lavender, Phlox 'David', and Golden Rod. It is highly attractive to butterflies. (seed propagated) Leave standing over winter to provide seeds for birds. Cut back in mid-spring

Tips For Growing Echinacea (Purple Coneflower)

This genus is invaluable for the mid- to late-summer garden, bringing color into our plantings when many spring bloomers have gone green for the season. They are native to the eastern half of the U.S. and are most commonly found growing in prairie habitats.

Echinacea thrive in our gardens when provided with well drained soils, plenty of sunshine and moderate to dry moisture conditions depending on the species and cultivars. Healthy individual coneflowers will grow in the garden for 3 to 5 years. Species and cultivars raised from seed will often reseed themselves to continue their presence in our gardens.

'Rocky Top Hybrid' echinacea, while xeric, appreciates extra moisture provided by some easily accomplished water harvesting techniques. Plant it in a wide, shallow depression and mulch amply or place right up against the north side of a low, wide rock, tilted to shed water on the Echinacea's side.

Fall Care: You can leave the dried seed heads for winter, as they provide food for birds. Echinacea easily reseeds itself. You can cut back seed heads in the fall, where you don't wish the plant to reseed. Spring Care: Cut back the dry stalks to the crowns of the plant in early spring. Pull any unwanted seedlings in spring. They are easy to pull when young.

Fabulous, but taller than I expected

"There are absolutely gorgeous but can get quite tall! I have them in the front of a border with some taller perennials behind (Boltonia, vernonia, tall rudbeckia. ) First year they stayed pretty small. Year two they were what I expected- 2-3 feet tall. Year three- well now I think may have to move them because they range from 4 to over 5 feet. They are GORGEOUS but be warned these can get big! (I am in the UP of Michigan, harsh snowy winters, short cool summers, zone 4)"

Yes, rabbits eat this, but the plants bounce back

"A wild rabbit lives in my yard and battles me for control of the plants. He does eat the coneflowers - in the winter and early spring (March), he browses the plants all the way down to the ground. The plants rebound beautifully - every year, they come back thick and strong. The birds and rabbit tend to move seeds around in the garden, too - I get coneflowers sprouting in odd places. The first year from seed is leaves only, the second year, they bloom. It is easy to dig up and move the seedlings to where I want them or to give them to friends who may want coneflowers. The bees absolutely love the coneflowers."

Doing Very Well

"I had shied away from purpurpea because I thought it was ugly. But these plants are certainly workhorses in my garden Planted them in two places in spring. They are growing strong in spite of our scalding heat. One bunch is blooming beautifully, and one bunch is full of blooms. Can't see any pest problems yet. Will try them in a few more places next year."
