Description
36-48" x 48" wide. One of the best Blue Mist Spirea varieties, Caryopteris clandonensis 'Dark Knight' (Bluebeard) has the deepest blue color of them all. Its tidy, upright growth habit and profusion of flowering spikes make it an essential part of the summer landscape. A reliable performer, 'Dark Knight' flowers heavily every year. Of modest size, it can be used in front of low walls, as a hedge or in groups around the base of larger shrubs, small trees and upright evergreens. Avoid heavy wet clay soils. (cutting propagated)

Magical August-November blooms, Zone 6
"I plant this plant over early-season-bloomers like iris, yarrow and springtime bulbs - this plant grows later in the season and the foliage covers areas that seem a little bare by fall. This plant spreads to form mounds at least 4 feet wide. And they burst into bloom in mid-august and bloom continually until it gets very cold - late November here in zone 6. They are perfectly happy in clay. Rabbits dont eat them. I love how the seed pods look, but unless you love weeding, I recommend cutting the flower heads at the end of the season. The seeds are aggressive. On the plus side, the plant blooms the first year, so if you want more plants, just save the seed heads and shake 'em where you want 'em next year. I have had mixed success with transplanting these. The roots seem to go sidewise, so even if you dig far away from the plant for transplanting, chances are good you are cutting the main root. Better to use the seeds to start new plants where you want them or to share with friends. They bloom beautifully with aster and goldenrod. Check it my photos! Zone six, year two."

"I planted a row of these plants along a fence in a very hot, dry area that does not get much water. I planted them about 3 years ago and these plants absolutely thrive there. They are a nice, rounded shape and the flowers are so pretty and bees love them. I planted them in fall which I think helped them to get established well. Highly recommend!"

"Only thing I really don't like about this plant is that it's non native, but if you follow David Salman's 80/20 rule- this should be part of the 20% non native plants. It blooms much later in the year than many shrubs, typically starting around early September in my zone 5 garden, and stays in blooms for about a month. While in bloom I can always see at least 20 bees on this plant at a time it seems like, as well as frequent visits from butterflies and moths. It reseeds readily for me, and I give the seedlings to neighbors who don't have many late season blooming plants, however the seedlings are always a much softer purple, rather than the deep blue/purple on this cutting propagated cultivar. It's a lovely shrub and works well for me either on top of a berm, or in a shallow depression."

"My plant arrived healthy and I couldn't believe how easy it was to plant and care for it. I added some cow manure when planting and it shot right up. Now it has beautiful blue spires on it and it's doing very well in full sun in SC (not too many plants can take that!) I lightly mulched (with leaves) around the base and water it lightly every day. Can't wait to see it next year when it's fuller and blooming like crazy! THANK YOU FOR SUCH A GREAT PLANT AT A GREAT PRICE."

"This is a beautiful shrub that sits near the corner of my lot next to another caryopteris that hasn't bloomed yet. Truly a bee magnet (early Sept here in Nebraska). It's survived a bitter cold winter month and the heat and lack of rain this summer with a couple of deep soaks from my hose. My only disappointment is that it's not as dark blue as pictured."

"I ordered several of these and all but one looked great. One was a bit dried up and wilty. I'm pretty sure it died, but HCG honored my request for a replacement immediately, no questions asked. Best customer service I've ever had ANYWHERE from any business. Amazing. The ones that survived have tripled in size and look happy and healthy. They will get BIG so make sure to leave space for them to grow 10 times their size in a few years. Super hardy, heat tolerant, drought tolerant, and even road salt tolerant! Love these for the hot Colorado summers. Year round interest. Lush foliage in summer, flowers late summer and fall amd interesting seed heads for winter interest. Love this bush!!! Top fave. And after my amazing service from HCG they are my top fave now too!"
