How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
This High Country Gardens grama grass selection will be the star of your summer garden. Zig Zag Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua x 'Zig Zag', a cross between B. gracilis and B. hirsuta), was discovered by High Country Gardens Chief Horticulturist, David Salman, growing in Santa Fe, NM. With a compact form, this low-maintenance grass is ideal for mass planting and small space gardens. This is a xeric native selection that grows in hot sites with poor sandy, rocky, or loam soil. 'Zig Zag' is recommended for gardens west of the Mississippi and climates that receive 20'' or less of rain and snow each year, and is suitable for high elevations above 7,000 feet. It’s a fantastic, long-lived perennial to complement all types of perennials and other ornamental grasses, including Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium), Ratibida (Prairie Coneflower), and native bush sages (Salvia).
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge. See our shipping information page for approximate ship dates and more detailed information. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at (801) 769-0300 or contact us by email or chat.

"Ask me later. They seem healthy, but barely growing. . . maybe 5 inches tall."
"Unique grass - compact and in its second season very dense and full, long lasting seed heads. Purchased from HCG in Spring 2024, photo is from August 2025. Zone 5a, 7,500 ft, poorly drained heavy soil."
"This grabbed my immediate attention in the early spring season catalog. Full, fun, different and attractive. Received the plants at the right planting time with clear instructions. Four months in the ground and the plants have easily tripled in size and are sending up the attractive 'zig-zag' stems. Looks great in the garden and gives some unique interest."
"Added this grass plant to a rock garden to balance off another Gramma grass plant in the same area. Still too early to see how the grass will look when it grows up, but I really like Gramma type grasses."
"I ordered two of these little grasses (and they did come as VERY small, wimpy plugs essentially in a 4 inch pot). Planted in early April in a border that's next to my driveway in a high desert zone 7 garden. The one that's planted right next to my driveway is in full, baking sun, plus gets all the radiant heat from the pavement. It's about tripled in size but is still small, though it has the adorable little ""eyebrow"" seed heads. The other one gets slightly less sun and heat as it's planted further back in the border. It's about doubled in size and is doing fine, but it's clear this grass enjoys it HOT. Both are planted in an area with drip irrigation but I placed these pretty far away from the drip line, so they don't get nearly as much water as the rest of the garden. They seem to be doing well, but are a bit slower growing. I expect to see a bigger plant next year. I do absolutely love the color and texture of the grass blades. Very fine and soft and the seed heads are beautiful to look at. If I had the room for it's bigger sister plant, Blonde Ambition, I would plant that as well. But I'm happy to have a more compact version and was thankful to find it from HCG. I would recommend this plant, but caution that if you get the smallest size, you'll be waiting a while to enjoy this grass in its full glory."
"Finally- a small, xeric grass that doesn't seed, to take the place of blue fescue or little pennisetums. A nice stiff stem resists lodging (flopping)- this is essentially a slightly more subtle and miniature Blonde Ambition. A vigorous clone that so far doesn't threaten to re-seed- it established quickly to bloom even when planted in summer. This lil' brother to Blonde Ambition is very useful among shorter plants and in the rock garden."
