6-8' tall x 6-8' wide (seed propagated). A little-known deciduous native shrub from NM and CO, Berberis fendleri contributes year-round beauty to the garden. Bright red fruit (that hang on the plant all winter) follow the profuse display of pendulous yellow spring flowers. Its edible fruits taste like tart cherries. Plant in semi-shade locations with rich garden soil. Keep mulched and water regularly. To insure fruit set, plant two or more plants for cross-pollination. Berberis fendleri does have thorns and is an excellent shrub for creating songbird habitat and providing nectar for pollinators, as it produces large quantities of fragrant flowers. It is a fast growing shrub when planted into good soil and given adequate water. It doesn't like to be grown dry, as it is a riparian species in nature. A quick grower, it will reach approximately 4 -5 ft in height and spread in just three to four growing seasons. (Previously listed as Mahonia fendleri).

"I planted two of these years ago, that I got from HCG. I planted them in the broken shade of some aspen trees. They have thrived, and are actually much larger than what is typical: about 12' x10'. The cascade of yellow flowers in spring is a spectacular show. Equally wonderful are the hanging red berries that add color through our long, bleak eastern Oregon winter."
"I had to move it because the original site had too much shade. In the new location, it gets at least 4 hours of full sun. It has grown well and is now well established. It can tolerate some draught. I had to wait three years for the first flush of flowers this year but oh what a show!"
"I have 6 of these shrubs. One didn't make it and was promptly replaced by HCG and has almost caught up to the earlier planted specimens. Slow growing at first but are now showing accelerated growth in amended clay soil. Two sets of three shrubs planted in very different conditions; one set on east side of house and one set on west where they are blasted by heat & full sun (until my young Quercus buckleyi provides some partial shade) both sets are performing equally well. Somewhat open, lax form with arching branches, Very attractive ( I did not want a dense, dark, heavy look such as lilacs might give), pretty fall color."
"This came smaller than I expected, but has grown a lot. The coloring in the winter and the spring were pretty. It is June 1 and it is not blooming yet, but that may be because it is only 5 Months in the ground here, in New Jersey . It fared well in the winter with no protection next to a wall. I think it will be a beautiful shrub. The staff recommended it to me."

"This is my favorite salvia. It grows well, will tolerate being both a little too dry or a little too wet. The bees love it. Tolerates my HEAVY clay soil. It flowers pretty much all summer and into the fall if you deadhead it regularly. The only problem I ever have with it, is it gets powdery mildew if it rains a lot. It always comes back the following year healthy though."
"I really liked this shrub and was looking forward to having it in my garden. Unfortunately it died in its second winter. We had an especially cold winter in the denver area so possibly would do better in a more typical one. I'll try it again and hope it gets more mature before another suoer cold winter comes along."
"I bought 5 acres of pinon juniper woodland. Species diversity is low, possibly due to over 10 years of drought. I have been collecting seeds where I can; however have not seen Berberis fendleri even though it is listed in my county in NM. My plants arrived safe and healthy. I am grateful to High Country Gardens for providing these plants. I will come back for more shrubs and trees as they become available. My goal is to create a food forest for wildlife and myself, as well as for the areas around me that will receive free seeds from me through birds and other wildlife. Share the bounty!"
