How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Viking Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is an upright growing native shrub that was selected in Europe for its fruit production. An attractive ornamental plant, its glossy green foliage turns a stunning red color in fall. It blooms in mid- to late spring with clusters of fragrant small white flowers that mature into blue-black berries that ripen in late summer. The berries can be eaten right off the bush and have a very high antioxidant content. The fruits can be also be used for juice, pies, and jellies or left on the shrub to provide food for birds and other wildlife. Use it as a hedge or mix it into the landscape to enhance its value as habitat for birds and pollinators.

"doing an island of plants in the middle of the 2 acre front yard. Plants looked very healthy upon arrival and seem to be doing well. I will know more next spring."
"I received the plant in March and repotted the plant into a slightly larger pot one month later. The plant has been kept in full sunlight. The small flowers were attractive appearing. The berries formed soon after the flowering finished. The plant is still very healthy looking."
"I planted in a pot. It overwintered but died in the late spring and was attacked by spider mites. Although it says it's recommended for pots and did survive the winter, it didn't handle the Spring well"
"I ordered two, they arrived dormant with dried leaves. I planted immediately, per instructions, after emailing HCG. I carefully viewed the roots before planting and while not appearing white, they also did not appear rotten. One plant has begun to develop small side shoots, the other not. I will wait to see how they do. HCG was responsive to an email confirming they were meant to be dormant."
"It seemed to be in good health when it arrived and I planted it promptly. It had irrigation, but we get a lot of wind and all the leaves turned brown and fell off. I'm hoping it will grow new ones, but it looks pretty dead."
"I ordered 2 chokeberry plants and they arrived well packed and super healthy. We were able to get them into large potting bags and look forward to the berries!"
"This little shrub arrived dormant. Halfway through the first growing season it has doubled in size and looking healthy. Very pleased."
"Chokeberries are usually very hardy. Hoping this one is."
"I'm using this in a part-shady border around my backyard. Still in its first year so plants are small - maybe 1 ft tall midway through the first growing season - but looking strong and healthy! Looking forward to seeing how this continues to grow."
"We planted 17 chokeberries in our front yard to make a small hedge. They are growing wonderfully. I can't wait for them to fill in—in just two months they have grown at least a foot!"
