Symphyotrichum oblongifolius 'Dream of Beauty' (Aromatic Aster) is big on blooms from mid-summer to fall, providing easy-care, long-lasting garden color. Shorter in stature than many Asters, it will brighten the garden with dense foliage and sweet pink flowers. A favorite of butterflies, this native cultivar is essential for late-season blooms in the pollinator garden.
Symphyotrichum oblongifolius 'Dream of Beauty' (Aromatic Aster) is a garden workhorse blooming from mid-summer to fall. This High Plains native was introduced in 1960 by the Great Plains plantsman Claude Barr. Give this perennial plenty of room to fill in, as it will easily spread to 24" wide. To create a more dense, compact plant, cut back by one-fourth in early summer. Happy in sun or morning sun with afternoon shade, this Aster will grow in a wide range of soil types, from sandy to average, including clay. Keep soil moderately moist to establish, thereafter, this plant is both drought and heat tolerant. An excellent choice for a wildflower garden or meadow, it will naturalize when happy. Leave plant standing over winter, then cut it back to 1-2" above ground in early spring. Asters are deer-resistant pollinator favorite that provide much-needed late-season pollen for bees and butterflies, and later, seed for birds. Plant with Lavender, Echinacea (Coneflower), other Asters, and Ornamental Grasses.
Planting & Care
Growing Aster (Aster)
These are late summer/fall blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide an ample late season nectar supply for butterflies and bees. As such, they are an indispensible perennial for late season color and for feeding migrating Monarchs. Asters are resistant to browsing rabbits.
They grow well in most any type of soil including clay.
Mulch with common mulching materials as well as gravel when planted in a xeriscape.
Most do well with regular irrigation to keep the soil moderately moist. Some species are more xeric.
Plant in full sun or part sun. Some varieties will stretch in too much shade
Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil.
Species that spread to form wide growing clumps can be divided in mid-spring.
Fertilize in the fall with Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Deadheading is not necessary, but will reduce re-seeding of seed-grown varieties.
Leave standing over the winter months and cut back hard to 1 to 2" above the ground.
If foliage becomes affected with mildew at the end of the growing season, cut back to the ground and remove the leaves/stems to the compost pile or trash.

Great plant, but reseeds like CRAZY!
"This is an attractive, easy-to-grow plant that doesn't need a lot of care or water. Provides masses of attractive, sugar-pink flowers in fall, a favorite of pollinators. But be sure to deadhead right after blooming, or you're going to have this plant EVERYWHERE, it reseeds at the drop of a hat!"
— Kathy (3/5)
These are special
"As the daylilies and black-eyed Susan's are winding down, these asters bloom. They are covered in blossoms from mid-September to frost, zone 6."
— Intermountain G. (5/5)
Multiplied in size 2nd year!
"Planted these in spring of 2023 and bloomed nicely in late summer. This year they have increased and I can't wait to see all the blooms in August. Sometimes you read a plant will spread by certain amount but it doesn't depending on where or how you plant it. These Asters are so pretty and have really spread nicely!"
— Plant M. (5/5)
doing well
"looking forward to flowers in fall"
