Aquilegia chrysantha (Golden Spur Columbine) blooms for months beginning in late spring with a profusion of large, cheerful yellow flowers that attract hummingbirds. Allow the plant to reseed itself to form colorful long lived colonies. (seed propagated).
30-36" tall x 18" wide. Native to the canyons of the Southwest, this is one of the most widely adapted of all columbines. A vigorous grower, it combines excellent heat tolerance and mildew resistance with a long display of fragrant yellow flowers in late spring. A good rebloomer if promptly deadheaded. Quite sun tolerant at higher elevations.
Planting & Care
Growing Aquilegia (Columbine)
Aquilegia (Columbine) are native, shade loving perennials that provide ample nectar for hummingbirds. They are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer.
These perennials grow best in compost enriched garden loam and dislike clay.
Should be mulched in dry climates with most types of common mulch materials.
Prefer regular watering to keep the soil moderately moist, but too much water makes them floppy.
Plant in part sun (morning sun/afternoon shade) or dappled shade, although at high elevation (above 7,000 ft.) they will do fine in full sun with regular irrigation. Aquilegia chrysantha and A. desertorum are the most sun tolerant.
Prepare the soil with good quality compost (not bagged manure, it’s too salty) and Yum Yum Mix.

Burst of Sunshine
"I got one of these 2 years ago as it was one of the few plants I could find that could tolerate shade. Ive since planted 2 more as they not only tolerate a challenging shady place under a Pinon tree, but are flourishing. The picture attached shows one of the three at just a year old. All 3 are growing fast and the bright yellow flowers are very happy-making"

Not bad, deer like them
"These are doing well after a year - the deer do like them in the springtime, but they bounce back. Have yet to bloom - probably the deers fault lol"

I highly recommend this hardy Columbine and may buy more!
"My yard has a lot of shade and I'm so glad I bought this plant! The plants were well packed and healthy when they arrived. Once planted, they quickly started growing new leaves and branches. I will let them grow and fill up as much space as they can - they are beautiful and hardy!"

Perfect for shady yard
"We live on the Colorado Plateau at 7000 feet and have relatively short growing seasons. We have several large ponderosa pines that shady a huge chunk of our yard most of the day. I also try to only plant native plants directly into the ground (I do non-natives in containers). It's been very difficult to find plants that will grow and flower well in the shadier bits. But these golden spur columbine do great. We usually get 2 or 3 rounds of flowers if we deadhead regularly."

Healthy plant
"These. Plants arrived healthy. no bloom this year but with plenty of water have already gone for ent or died in the heat. Hoping they will come back as I I not only love the bloom but the foliage is lovely"
— Deb (5/5)
I would buy this plant again
"Plants arrived healthy and a good size for transplanting. The plants chose not to bloom this season, but they are growing in size and looking good. Can't wait to see them next season in bloom."
