Description

Our Columbine Collection features four favorite native Aquilegia cultivars for pollinator-friendly shade gardens. Columbines are drought tolerant and cold hardy, perfect for adding a low-growing layer of color to the waterwise garden.

Planting & Care

Growing Aquilegia (Columbine)
Aquilegia (Columbine) are native, shade loving perennials that provide ample nectar for hummingbirds. They are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer.

  • These perennials grow best in compost enriched garden loam and dislike clay.
  • Should be mulched in dry climates with most types of common mulch materials.
  • Prefer regular watering to keep the soil moderately moist, but too much water makes them floppy.
  • Plant in part sun (morning sun/afternoon shade) or dappled shade, although at high elevation (above 7,000 ft.) they will do fine in full sun with regular irrigation. Aquilegia chrysantha and A. desertorum are the most sun tolerant.
  • Prepare the soil with good quality compost (not bagged manure, it’s too salty) and Yum Yum Mix.

"The Red Hobbit and Rocky Mtn varieties have bloomed the most, followed by the Arizona. The Barnaby's has been tricky in my zone. I have one other planted in a different spot in addition to this one, and neither of them have bloomed much. When they do the blooms are pretty, but tiny. The Rocky Mtn. one I got with this collection is a pure white variety - no purple. I was surprised at this, but I actually love it because it's unique. These plants have been great as a foundation for my Columbine garden, and I'm looking forward to them self- seeding many more in the seasons to come."

"Yes, the plants came in good condition and have grown very well. The disappointment comes with the colors. The two that should have been red hobbit bloomed as blue. The yellow is fantastic. one more to bloom and I'll find out what color it is. Yellow with the blues on either side of it just isn't great visually. I DO appreciate the quality of the plants."

"I grow these columbines in 5-gallon pots on my patio, 1 plant to a pot, at 7000-ft. I find these columbines survive our winters quite well. Takes about 3 years to fill the pot. I do use Yum-Yum mix at planting, also when I put them to bed in the fall, and in the spring when they wake up."
