How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
(60-72" tall x 18-24" wide) 'Mars Magic' Single Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is a pollinator favorite, classic perennial that lights up the garden with single scarlet blossoms 4 inches across. Its red saucer-like flowers open from the bottom of the stalk upwards. Exceptionally bright, the flowers are plentiful, and each plant grows several stalks 5-6 feet tall. They don’t need staking, and look beautiful at the back of a bed or along a wall or fence where they can add a romantic backdrop to other flowers. Plant 'Mars Magic' in average to compost-enriched soil with good drainage in a sunny location. Provide average watering, they are drought tolerant once established. Deer and rabbit resistant, they are a perfect choice for care-free high color. Cut them back when flowering has finished or leave the seed pods for winter interest and the birds. Hardy in zones 3-9, they won’t tolerate wet feet in winter.

"They're in a raised bed and they became the stars of the bed. Gorgeous and the hummingbirds love them."
"I posted year 1 above. Year 2 gave me a profusion of flowers that I can't get enough of! I am just enchanted by these flowers. We had a snowy winter, so they got lots of moisture and a small clump stayed green through even the coldest weeks. They bloomed earlier this year than last, and the stalks aren't as tall. But they've put up probably 3x as many blossoms. Most are deep, rich red while a couple of pink stalks are mixed in. The bees and ladybugs love them. No grasshoppers yet, but I've been spritzing them with Neem oil, just in case. I've already ordered more for fall delivery with some of them earmarked for gifts."
"Arrived healthy and growing quickly. The marmots (ground squirrels) nibbled on it initially, then left it alone (there are few plants they don't eat). We have short (last and first snow typically are mid-June and late September), dry (more than 2 months without precipitation) summers. So far the Hollyhock doing great, I'm excited to see it thrive, and hoping it flowers before fall snow. #sweepstakes"
"Plants arrived and looked very healthy. They are growing well. Too early for flowers but the plants are now firmly established in my garden"
"It took me a little while to plant these. I couldn't decide where they should go. So I was worried they might not take when I finally put them in the ground. They were amazing! I have always wanted hollyhocks in my yard and these exceeded my expectations. The flowers were prolific, the leaves enormous, and they were easy to grow. The grasshoppers wanted to eat them when they were leafing out, so I applied neem oil for a few weeks and didn't have any problems after that. I life in N. New Mexico, where hollyhocks are ubiquitous, but you rarely see deep red ones, and they rarely have great big, deep green leaves. I'm more than pleased with these and will add more to my garden - when I decide where to put the next batch!"
"We experienced a blizzard where I live this past winter and these little beauties survived! They are now flourishing albeit a little late in season because of the longer winter. I would plant these literally anywhere in my garden provided there's enough sun. Hollyhocks are one of my very favorites - they pack a punch."
"Planted along a cedar fence line - they grew so well! First time planting this perennial so did not know what to expect but have been adding different varieties to this hummingbird feeding area."
"Plants arrived in great condition. Packaged well. I planted 2 of these in the spring and although I have tons of foliage now in August, I see no signs of shoots for blooms. Perhaps it will bloom next year."
"I planted this last year and it established itself quickly. Good growth and some flowers were encouraging. This spring it took off. I left town for a week and returned only to see the leaves on the bottom half covered with rust. I removed the leaves but it was continued to make its way to the top. I've removed all of the leaves and am treating it with a copper fungicide with hopes of saving it for next year. It's well over 6 ft and covered with flowers so certainly worthy of a place in my garden."
