Planting & Care

Step-by-Step Wildflower Seed Planting Instructions

  1. Check for your last frost date and plant after this has passed. Choose a
    spot on your property that gets 6 or more hours of direct sun a day unless you are planting seeds for shade.
  2. Prepare your soil by clearing the area of all existing growth. Simply dig up everything that is growing, turn the soil and rake the area flat. If this is an area that has never before been gardened, you may need to till the area up to remove growth.
  3. Mix the seeds with sand* for better visibility and scatter the seeds directly on top of the soil. If you are sowing a larger area, we recommend using a seed spreader; if not, you can sow by hand.
  4. We recommend lightly compressing the seeds into the soil, making sure not to bury them. You can either walk on them, use a board or if you are sowing a larger area, rent a seed roller.
  5. Water so that the soil is moist, not soaking wet, until the seedlings are about 4-6" tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. If you are experiencing very dry weather, we recommend watering occasionally.

I hope these are available next Spring!

"I am very slowly and very casually trying to return my yard to its native inhabitants (Maybe spending $3k to get all the Italian Arum dug up elevates me to above casual 😩). I didn't put a lot of effort into spreading this seed. I kinda just wanted to see what I would get out of it in a few spots as a bit of a scientific experiment. On the bare patch that I spread most of this seed, I now have Solomon's Plume and Diamond Clarkia popping up. I also spread it in some grassy areas and I do have some native plants popping up there, but I'm not sure if they're from this pack. Very excited to lasagna mulch my front yard this Fall and buy a fat sack of this seed for next year!"

Great blooms

"I use the seeds in areas that have been disturbed by wild turkeys to prevent noxious weed species from getting established. I also planted the seeds in otherwise bare areas. I have gotten results everywhere I sown these seeds for the past two seasons. The only thing I don't know for sure is if they are seeding on their own, but I did get some flowers in a few random spots I don't think I sown seeds. It appears very likely some of the species are seeding themselves. I'll know more next spring. I highly recommend this seed blend in the Rogue River Valley in southern Oregon. Probably great results throughout the region."

Joyful wildflowers

"I followed instructions, as I've never sown seed before. I cleared a 20x20' area in my very large backyard. A light topsoil added over unimproved soil. I planted the seeds on Mother's Day right before 5 days of rain were due. Then I watered them every morning until the plants got established, then every other morning. The reward: all these beautiful flowers started appearing, and appearing; there were blooms up into November! It created great joy to come out everyday and be filled with images of wildflowers."
