How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Propagated from cuttings, this essentially pollen-free buffalo grass is exceptionally robust, spreading quickly with vigorous runners to form a dense, inviting, deep green lawn that withstands heavy foot traffic, pests and diseases.
Buffalo grass grows easily in a wide range of soil types and actually prefers heavy clay. It requires minimal mowing, little or no fertilization (depending on soil type) and forms a tight, highly weed-resistant ground cover. This is a warm season grower best adapted to low rainfall regions that receive 10" to 30" of annual precipitation at elevations below 6,500 to 7000 ft.
This grass typically uses 45-75% less water than Kentucky bluegrass, needing only 2" of water per month to stay during the heat of summer! While all buffalo grass turns a soft beige color when dormant in late fall through mid-spring, 'Legacy®' was developed to up earlier in the spring and hold its color longer into the fall than any other variety. 'Legacy®' is a very quick grower. Using our jumbo plugs you can expect to cover an area planted on 12" x 12" centers in about 3 months, or in only 2 months when planted on 6" x 6" centers (depending on your growing conditions). You can plant our plugs beginning in late spring right through the summer and into the early fall. Plugging a buffalo grass lawn will save up to two-thirds of the cost of buffalo grass sod.
Remember that buffalo grass is not suited to the following conditions:
- More than a half day of shade
- Very sandy soils (Grama Grass is better)
- Elevations greater than 6,500 to 7,000 ft. with short, cool summers. (In these areas, cool season grasses are the best.
One flat of 70 plugs spaced 12" x 12" apart covers 70 sq. ft. Spaced 6" x 6" one flat covers 17.5 sq. ft. (Cutting propagated.) Learn how to plant and maintain Buffalo Grass. or see Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet is provided with each order.

"Filled in nicely in less than a year. For context, we got our plugs in the ground the last week of August 2024 (in Santa Fe) and spaced 12". They overwintered fine. It wasn't until the following March greenery poked through and the grass took off. By June the yard had nearly filled in. It's a very fast growing, soft, delicate, and thick grass. It's pretty against the natural New Mexico landscape. I bought it to crowd out the weeds (primarily kochia which is prolific). Between 2 - 3 rounds pulling the kochia prior to planting the grass, and then continuing to pull the remaining weeds that came in as the grass filled in, we've managed to mostly win the war on kochia. The grass has long runners and the wild bunnies can't mow it fast enough. Really holds up well. Will order more this season for other parts of the yard."
"I am cautiuosly optomistic that the buffalo grass plugs will fullfill my needs. Ordered and recieved 3 flats of plugs (270 plugs) in May and recieved them on time. Followed all the planting suggestions with the exception of cutting the root ball a bit. I didn't notice that step in the directions until I was almost through with planting. I planted them at 15"" spacing. Now nearly 3 months in, the grass is expanding. It is a bit variable in the spread, where some areas are filling in very nicely and other areas, while sending out runners, it still patchy. With only about 1 to 1. 5 months of growing season left I think I will have to wait to next year to see if it expands to uniformly cover the planted area. I live in northern NM at 6500 ft elevation. Based on growth to this point, I'm optomistic. On a plus note, all plugs are still living, not a single one died."
"Follow the instructions and this stuff will get after it."
"The Legacy grass is beautiful. But, I am having a problem with it. The runners are driving me crazy. When I mow the grass, my lawn mower isn't able to catch all of the runners, so I have to go back over with a rake & try again. Am I doing something wrong here?"
"I live in the Denver area, and most of the lawns around here are cool season grasses. Establishing and maintaining a cool season lawn in the high desert is not only difficult, but an affront to nature. It's akin to keeping a pet whale in your living room. Possible, but in direct defiance of nature. I ordered these plugs in February and they arrived ahead of schedule at the end of April. Unfortunately, bad timing related to an ongoing landscaping project meant that there was nowhere to plant them yet. So they spent a full month in their tray cells before I was able to put them in the ground. I lost maybe 5-10% of the plugs overall. Not too bad, given the circumstances. Planting was harder than I thought. I did my planting in late May/early June. I bought the auger drill bit from this site, and it was a life saver. Even drilling 700 holes in the ground is hard work, but without that bit it would have been a real booger of a project. It took me 3 days, anywhere from 4 to 8 hours per day, to get them all planted. I'd used some Barricade pre-emergent on the soil earlier in the year (predominant weeds are spurge and purslane), and I put down some Haltz after planting. Also some 16-0-0 fertilizer since my soil tests showed adequate P&K levels already. I reapplied the Haltz and fertilizer about a month later due to extremely heavy rains in our area early this summer. Here it is in late July, and the Legacy is establishing well so far. It still has a ways to go before I'd call it ""established"", but all of the plugs survived and are a nice shade of green. I'm hoping to see a full mat of grass by the end of the season."
"Follow the instructions for planting and you will end up with a great drought tolerant lawn."
"Very good"
"Until trees shaded the area this was a show place for ""Legacy"". I took hundreds of plugs after it was firmly established to share with friends and family. I never ever watered or fertilized and mowed only twice a season to tidy more than shorten. The mat it forms was like walking on a cushion. Use edging or plant in a naturally edge-restricted area such as a parkway."
"I ordered 14 trays of Buffalo grass this spring to plant in my backyard lawn area. Starting with blank, quality topsoil, as good as I could get in Colorado (very sandy). I planted almost 1000 of these plugs. This in and of itself was a lot of work. They started growing at first, but struggled in my soil from the get go. A late season snowfall sent them into a tail spin and they never recovered. I was pretty bummed. But! High Country Gardens customer service made it right! They went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied and offered to replace the entire order so I could try again. This grass will work extremely well in the long run and I plan on trying again this coming season. I would recommend this and any product from High Country Gardens on their customer service alone. If you are on the fence, know that High Country Gardens will have your back every step of the way. A word of warning to anyone without experience. . . planting these plugs was A LOT of work. Much more than I anticipated. Be aware"
"Tough grass for lawn uses."
