How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Bouteloua gracilis 'Hachita' (Blue Grama Grass) is the most vigorous selection of this beautiful native grass from the western Great Plains. Quite drought-resistant (xeric), it is easy to establish, excellent for erosion control and thrives in both sandy soils and clay!
Beloved for its "eyelash" seed heads, it can also be mowed once a month to create a soft, inviting lawn. 'Hachita' Blue Grama Grass grows in distinct bunches in warmer areas. In northern states, it forms more of a sod.
'Hachita' Blue Grama Grass is a warm season grower and prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It does not do well in shade, in areas with a high water table or with acidic soils.
'Hachita' Grass can be used in ornamental plantings singularly or in groups. You can also interplant plugs with wildflowers to grow a colorful, low-care short grass prairie. 4" tall (15" with seed heads).
For a turf type lawn, plant plugs 6" apart. 70 jumbo plugs per flat. A flat covers 17.5 sq. ft. See Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet is provided with each order. (Also available for order as seed.)
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and spring-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and spring-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your hardiness zone. Perennial and spring-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge. See our shipping information page for approximate ship dates and more detailed information. "These plugs are easy to handle, easy to plant, and the nursery that grew these seeds has done a fabulous job getting blue grama plugs like this in such condition. (I know, I've tried to grow them myself with abysmal results--blue grama is a hard one to germinate!). Anyway, kudos to the growers!"
"Arrived on time and plants are not stressed."
"I live in USDA Zone 6b in a suburban area where we are encouraged to use cool-season grasses like fescue, rye, and bluegrass. However, in some parts of the lawn, these grasses struggle, so I did some Internet research and found that there are some grasses like this blue grama that can thrive in heat and drought, which we tend to have more of in the summer. The plants arrived healthy and as described and as pictured. I was happy because what you see is what you get. However, I would have liked the option to purchase smaller quantities as I was not trying to re-build an entire lawn but rather strengthen the areas of lawn that needed help. In any case, I would recommend High Country Gardens because it has been an honest retailer. This is actually my second or third purchase from them."
"Additional review with a picture this time. An example of how we use these plugs. We bought a place in Southern AZ, 5000 ft elevation, backyard off porch is a crazy mixture of curly mesquite, bermuda, sprangletop, buffalo grass and blue grama but there was a 6ft x 3ft patch of that darn yellow bluestem which we dug out with pickaxes and then planted a half flat of Hachita blue grama plugs in its place. Filled in entirely in one summer and flowered. Letting it seed in and won't cut it until it turns to straw in October. Healthy roots on those plugs for sure, thanks HCG!"
"Ordered twice and both times I received beautiful healthy green starter plugs. Easy to plant. Looking forward to them filling in. Thank you!"
"We are on year 3 of a 7 year reclamation program for a property we purchased in Southern Arizona high country (zone 8, 5000 ft). We are not doing a ""lawn"". We are recreating grassland that has been lost from former owner(s) abuse and overgrazing. We are at war with the KR yellow bluestem and lehman lovegrass, battling the bermuda and johnson grass, and re-establishing the natives. Mostly seeding past few years and now using the HCG grass plugs to fill in spots as well as one gallon plants purchased locally. All have their role. We expect some losses of the plugs after transplanting since locations are remote. However, we have had great success with the Hachita plugs, only about 10-15% mortality, and about 25% mortality with the HCG buffalo grass plugs. I consider that pretty darn good considering we are not watering them in every day and monsoon rain has been spotty. Also the Hachita from HCG has performed much better than the ""Blonde Ambition"" variety commonly sold now in the nursery trade. The blonde ambition has had 50% mortality for us as it does not seem to hold up to our summer hot spells of 100-102. So we will be continuing to buy more Hachita blue grama plugs from HCG and buying blue grama seed from the good folks in New Braunfels Texas. The roots on the plugs we received from HCG were strong - loosen them up before planting! We find the augur drill bit that HCG sells a handy tool too. Thanks again HCG! you are a part of our team"
"Planted over 700 hachita grass plugs. We did not get a formal tool to dig holes or purchase the recommended yumyum mix. We have not lost a single plug. Many have tripled in size since we planted them earlier this year. We are excited to have a xeric and native lawn. We also added a few other native perennials into the area to promote our pollinators. It's great. I will say I wish there was a better guide specifically for watering and planting. We found one for hachita seed and also one for Buffalo grass plugs but not specific to our product. We also noticed that the recommended 6-12 inch spacing is maybe too generous. We will likely purchase more left season to fill in some spaces. Would not plant any further than 6 inches apart."
"These grasses are amazing. I've planted four trays in the past year--some in the fall and some in the spring. The begin to thrive very quickly and are lovely. I used three trays to create a basis for a wildflower and shortgrass prairie, and the other to interplant with flowering plants in borders. In both cases they have grown quickly and look beautiful and soft, despite our relatively poor soil here. They are true workhorses in the garden."
"The blue gramma plugs we received from High Country Gardens were excellent quality and arrived in great condition. We ordered 70 and we only lost 2 but that was because I planted the last 2 too late. User error. I bought gramma grass plugs last year from a local company and the plugs from high country gardens have done so much better."
