Description

Iris reticulata 'Dark Blue' (Specie Iris) will reward you with gorgeous dark blue/purple blooms in early spring. This wildflower Iris is extremely cold hardy, and can be grown almost anywhere from zones 2-10. Plant with early spring blooming daffodils for a striking contrast.

Planting & Care

  • To see the second bloom, the conditions must be right, with full sun and rich, well-draining soil conditions.
  • Bearded Iris prefer at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day. In hot climates (zones 8-11), they will tolerate 4-6 hours of sun, and may need some shade during the day.
  • Bearded Iris rhizomes prefer shallow cultivation, with the top of the rhizome above ground. They grow especially well on slopes or in raised beds.
  • Reblooming Bearded Iris are heavy feeders, requiring more water and fertilizer for the extra boost to flower again.
  • Be sure to deadhead faded flower spikes promptly after the first bloom, so plants will have time to form new flowers.
  • Reblooming Iris are heavy feeders and benefit from a light topdressing of compost and Yum Yum Mix applied just after "deadheading" the plants.
  • Scratch in the compost/Yum Yum Mix lightly and water thoroughly to melt the nutrients into the soil.
  • To avoid burning rhizomes, apply around but not directly on them.

"These bulbs were the first to flower of all my bulbs (even tete a tete daffodils), which was an unexpected surprise. Unfortunately, the flower petals were much narrower proportionally than what is shown in the listing photo. Narrow leaves are >1. 5 ft long, which was unexpected. . . If you like a ""tidy"" look to your garden the long narrow leaves of this plant may not be for you, or just be mindful of this when choosing placement. "These have very pretty blue blossoms, but only bloomed for about one week. I had tucked them too close to my fescue and almost couldn't see them. Early February bloom (zone 9) which is nice when little else has color."
