1" tall x 18" wide. Silver Nailwort is a tough-as-nails groundcover with tiny green thyme-like leaves and silver seed heads that look like white flowers. Recommended as an improved substitute for white thyme because it's more durable and drought tolerant. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).

Description

1" tall x 18" wide, (cutting propagated), Native to the Pyrenees of southern Europe, Paronychia is a tough-as-nails groundcover that very closely resembles Creeping Thyme. However, we have found it to be much more xeric. It is resistant to fungal diseases of the stems and foliage and is very tolerant of dry winter conditions. As such, we are recommending it as a replacement for white-flowered thyme. Blooming in late spring, the flowers are insignificant, but the white bracts light up the plant for several months. Can tolerate occasional foot traffic

Planting & Care

Paronychia (Nailwort) - A low-growing groundcover native to limestone areas of the Pyrenees and Alp mountain ranges of Europe.

Preferred growing conditions

  • Plant in low fertility ("lean"), fast-draining soil in a full sun location. Avoid clay. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is not needed.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.

Special comments

  • Paronychia is an evergreen, mat-forming plant that needs little pruning or clipping. The white flowers quickly form showy white seed heads which stay on the plant for many months. Old seed heads can be scratched loose and swept or blown off (with a leaf blower) in late summer.
