Tips On Growing Berlandiera (Chocolate Flower)

Growing Berlandiera (Chocolate Flower) - An Old World species used as a small-scale ground cover.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in most any soil including clay with full sun conditions.
  • Mulch with gravel to encourage re-seeding. Otherwise, mulching is not needed.
  • Keep regularly watered for the first growing season to establish the roots. Infrequent but deep watering thereafter. Too much will cause the plant to get floppy.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix/compost blend.

Special comments:

  • Deadhead to prolong blooming. Cut back hard in early to mid-spring to a height of 2 to 3 inches.
  • Plants have a tap root and should not be divided or transplanted once established.
