How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
12-14" tall x 12" wide. A delightful addition to the semi-shade border, 'Red Hobbit' is a dwarf Danish selection with eye-catching red and white flowers. Hybridized from our native Rocky Mt. Columbine, it tolerates a wide range of growing conditions. We've found it does best in western gardens with compost-enriched soil with regular irrigation. This stable hybrid comes true to color when reseeding in the garden, unlike many other hybrid varieties. (seed propagated)
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge. See our shipping information page for approximate ship dates and more detailed information. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at (801) 769-0300 or contact us by email or chat.

"My Uncle and I love this plant he has it sitting next to were he swings out front, and the flowers are very vibrant and pretty and has alot of them popping up. I hope they will bring the humming birds"
"I have purchased plants before from HCG. Most have been fine. These plants (2) were removed from the shipping container within minutes of delivery. Let rest for a couple on days then transplanted to pots . They look relatively healthy but frail. I'm not too sure they will make it to spring."
"I have some blue columbine and wanted to add some variety and this Red Hobbit fits the bill nicely. The plant arrived healthy and well-packaged. It is thriving in its chosen spot based on its care requirements and is getting ready to bloom soon, a sure sign that it's happy where it's placed and establishing well. #sweepstakes"
"The Red Hobbit Columbine is small, as expected, but stands out among my other columbine because of it's bright red color."
"#sweepstakes The Red Hobbit arrived in good shape and I was able to get it into a large pot the same day it arrived. It took a few days for it to get over being transplanted but soon it was putting out new leaves. Eventually I want to put it in a shady border - for now it's enjoying being a potted plant on my north-facing patio."
"Healthy beautiful plants"
"The Red Hobbit Columbine is planted in the middle of my perennial bed, in the shade of a big Autumn Blaze Maple tree. I love the pop of red color! It looks delicate, but seems pretty tough. Love it! â¤ï¸"
"The plants arrived healthy and a good size for transplanting. The blooms were beautiful and true to the online pictures. Unfortunately the current crop of feral kittens used them as bedding and toys. They destroyed them. Will buy more earlier next spring from High Country Gardens. They were beautiful and pretty tough under attack by kittens."
"Love these have to see how they do next year"
"Healthy plants shipped well"
