Details

2" tall x 18" wide. 2005 Plant Select Winner. For the Western gardener, there is no finer ground cover. This is a vigorous, fast-growing species that thrive in difficult climates. The ground-hugging stems of round, glossy evergreen leaves, root as they creep across the garden, creating a thick green carpet. Veronica liwanensis can be used like thyme to create a ground cover "lawn". With the first hint of warmer weather to come, the small but numerous spikes of flowers paint the garden blue like a reflection of the sky. With a little extra water, Veronica liwanensis reblooms lightly later in summer. Needs afternoon shade in hot summer climates. This durable groundcover is ideal for a low maintenance, alternative lawn. (cutting propagated) Can tolerate occasional foot traffic.

Flat of 32 plants will cover 48 square feet when planted together

Comments about High Country Gardens Veronica liwanensis:

This hardy Veronica is slow and steady and very attractive year round! When it is in bloom, then it's a downright conversation starter.
It is not as quick to spread as Veronica pectinata, but in my opinion, it is worth the wait. The leaves look almost like tiny boxwood leaves.
It is also one of the shortest Veronica, for a tidy, groomed appearance.
I did not amend our alkaline, low fertility, high desert soil. Planted in early spring. Watered in and then occasionally and lightly watered thereafter.
As you can see in the photo, I didn't mulch. It's planted in a spot where it gets blazing sun until mid afternoon, after which it is in complete shade. Feast or famine.

Comments about High Country Gardens Veronica liwanensis:

The plants arrived in good condition and I planted them right away. My soil could be a little better well.drained as they are planted on an incline. However, after5 months they are established but do not really show any growth or tendency to spread and no sign of blooming. For the price I find them a poor choice.

Comments about High Country Gardens Veronica liwanensis:

I learned about this plant from the garden volunteer who put in the patio (first photo) at the Belen Art League's Gallery. Plants in this photo are about 3 years old. They are so beautiful that I got some for myself last fall. They overwintered nicely, growing all winter. They are blooming now. I would like to eventually have a front yard of ground cover plants like this.

I loved this in Seattle, and love it even more in high plains desert MT, where it takes the cold wet winters and hot dry summers.

I put in a very large patio with concrete pavers leaving irregular open spaces against a short wall between lawn and patio. I planted veronica in the open space and it has done very well even in the compacted road base I placed the concrete on. Draping over concrete and the wall it is beautiful.

                    Q & A

                    Suggested Companion Plants:

                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

                    Find Your Planting Zone:
