Description

Orange Globe Mallow (Sphaeralcea munroana) is a welcome sight in midsummer when the heat has driven most other flowers out of bloom. Sphaeralcea's long wands of orange flowers resemble miniature hollyhocks. A deep-rooted wildflower native to the western U.S., Orange Globe Mallow is not the least bit picky about its soil and thrives in heavy clay. Cut last year's stems back to ground level each spring for best appearance. Plant amongst Callirhoe, another clay lover, for a great summer color combination. 36-42" tall x 24" wide (seed propagated).

Planting & Care

Sphaeralcea munroana (Orange Globe Mallow) - native to arid areas of the Great Basin in western North America. Very resistant to browsing deer and rabbits.

Preferred growing conditions

  • Plant in most soil types, including dry clay. Position in a full sun location.
  • Mulch with gravel.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, only occasional deep watering is needed when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
  • Deadheading will not extend flowering. But, Sphaeralcea likes to re-seed itself, so deadheading will reduce unwanted seedling volunteers.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum

Special comments

  • Leave standing over the winter. Cut back to just above ground level in mid-spring. Pinch the tips of new stem growth to thicken the plant with more stems and flowers later in the growing season.
  • Plants will sometimes sucker and spread too widely for their space. Dig suckers in early to mid-spring and discard.
  • Some people are sensitive to minute, prickly hairs on stems and leaves; if so, use gloves when working with these plants.
