Description

Texas Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus (Echinocereus dasyacanthus) has attractive fine textured spination and huge, bright yellow flowers. Its common name, rainbow, refers to the spines which vary in color and create attractive bands that circle the stems. The plants are usually single-stemmed and bloom in late spring with flowers emerging from the tops of the stocky stems. This handsome cactus is from West TX and southeastern NM. Grow it in hot, full sun locations. Companion plants include other cacti as well as Fame Flower (Phemeranthus), Black Foot Daisy (Melampodium) and Penstemon (Beardtongue).
