Roll out the red carpet for hummingbirds and butterflies with Texas Plume (Ipomopsis rubra). This deer-resistant native wildflower blooms with stately spikes of vibrant red flowers in early to mid-summer, and will readily multiply. Plant some in containers for a close-up view, too. At High Country Gardens, all seeds are non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Biennial.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
(36-72" tall) The soaring spikes of Texas Plume reach
up to 6' high, beckoning hummingbirds and butterflies from near and far to savor
their nectar. The brilliant red blooms make a stunning backdrop for shorter
plants in a garden bed or along a fence line. In a meadow, its tall flowers
bloom in early to mid summer, heralding the start of high summer. Each flower
consists of a narrow tube that flares open to a five-petal star. Flowers are
scarlet red, some with speckles of yellow on the inside. Individual plants are
biennial, but they will self-sow to create a permanent planting. Plant this
beauty in full sun and average to dry soil. And don't worry about deer munching
on this native wildflower and ruining the show; it's not on their menu of
favorites. Other names for this plant include Flame Flower, Skyrocket, Standing
Cypress, Red Gilia, and Scarlet Gilia.
