Grass Seed Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
View Complete Grass Seed Planting Guide and Soil Preparation Guide
1. Preparing the area for planting. We recommend leveling the planting area as much as possible to eliminate high or low spots. Till the soil if possible about 4-6 inches deep, as the soil should be loose and clump-free before planting. If your area is already somewhat bare and even, we recommend skipping the tilling process as it can promote new weed growth or unwanted grass growth. You can then add Plant Success Granular Mycorrhizal Root Inoculant to improve seed germination.
2. After your soil is prepared, apply the seed at the recommended rate. Planting rates vary depending on the size of the seed:
To make sure you’re spreading the seed evenly, scatter 1/2 of the seed walking north to south and 1/2 of the seed walking east to west.
3. If you have poor soil, you could lightly apply an organic fertilizer after seeding, although this is not a necessary step for strong growth. We recommend using Yum Yum mix to amend your soil.
4. Many choose to cover their grass seed after planting, even though this is not necessary. If you do choose to cover your seed to help retain moisture and hold the seed in place, we recommend a maximum depth of 1/4”. You can cover the seed with topsoil, clean wheat or barley straw, or peat moss. Coated seeds such as Bermuda and Clover seeds should not be covered more than an 1/8” deep.
5. Water gently and regularly, keeping the seeds moist until they begin to sprout. This could mean watering more than once a day if you’re having a dry spell. Once the seeds sprout, water deeply and less frequently. This helps to ensure a deep rooted, healthy lawn or meadow.
6. Do not mow until your lawn is at the recommended height. For most grasses, this is about 3-6 weeks after planting, but could be longer depending on growing conditions. Remember to be gentle when mowing the first few times -- the seedlings will be somewhat tender.
7. After mowing several times, you can apply an organic fertilizer to promote strong growth, but this is not a necessary step.
Remember: It may take weeks or even a month for the seeds to grow.

We have three dogs, three kids and the Kentucky bluegrass that was our back lawn had been completely killed by the dogs, but we really wanted something low maintenance that the kids could play on. We also live in northern Colorado, so a xeric lawn is a must for us. We seeded this grass heavily (10 pounds for 650 sq ft), and amended our plot with a lot of mushroom compost prior to planting. The grass took a good three months to really establish itself, but it is beautiful! We water about every five days and I'm not sure that will decrease in the future, but we are watering frequently too, given it's its first year. It grows FAST between mowings, but even tall is still attractive. Earlier in the summer I was regularly hand pulling weeds, but the grass has grown in quite thick and choked out most of them, especially the bind weed, which is a HUGE relief! This grass is still bright green even at the end of a Colorado summer when everyone's bluegrass lawns have gone dormant. We have ensured that our dogs are no longer allowed to roam freely in that part of the yard, but I will say that the times they've peed on it have burned if not killed small patches and very quickly. If you have dogs and can't sequester them, I wouldn't recommend this grass.I regularly see spiders and lady bugs in the lawn, so I know we've got a healthy ecosystem going on back there, and in early spring that young grass patch was feeding its fair share of robins. I can't say enough good things about this grass. We love our new lawn. Thanks for making a fantastic product!

I ordered this lawn seed from High Country Gardens two years ago it's actually a mix of two different varieties. We installed it last year and it's growing well. Unfortunately, one of the varieties in the mix grows much taller than the other and has a much wider and tuffer blade, so we find ourselves mowing as often as we did before.

Comments about High Country Gardens Low Work and Water Dwarf Fescue Grass Seed:
With some help from a sprinkler system, we grew a backyard and side yard full of grass during a Wyoming summer. The grass is pretty and hardy - it's maintaining its color longer into the Fall than surrounding grasses. Some spots grow much faster than others and the two types of seed show some differences, but for the cost savings and our success rate, we are delighted with this. Hopefully it will come back next year just as well!

We bought ghis grass to overseed our lawn. It was slow to sprout but once it sprouted it started growing very fast. It is not a dwarf mix, in fact the grass needs mowing weekly.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

So glad we bought this. It's beautiful.

Tired of watering, mowing and babying Kentucky Blue Grass, we seeded the usual bare spots in our lawn this spring along with overseeding the Blue Grass. It is beautiful and is thriving in our poor soil. There are only a couple of patches of Blue Grass left. I am anxious for the fescue to crowd it out. Have recommended it to several friends around the county.

It seems that the wild turkeys are as excited to see this new lawn as I am.

Really unattractive when it gets over 80 degrees
Quite disappointed in this grass. Despite watering it everyday, when it gets more then 80 degrees it goes brown. In fact, when a gardener was over at my house last weekend she looked at it and said "Are you thinking about putting in a lawn?" Ouch. It has been in a year and looked it's best 60 days after going in. I'm hoping I can overseed it without tearing it up a second time.

I dormant seeded with this grass between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I had the yard aerated in the fall. The spring grass has come in soooo thick. Neighbors have commented on how good it looks.

Worked first time
from Tonasket, WA
We planted the grass late in the fall wondering if we would get good germination. It did well and even started looking like a lawn before the snow came. With the snow melting, it is bright green and looking good. We may need to fill in a few small spots, but even as it is, it is the best lawn start we've had.

Lowmwork and water fescue
This was an over seed. Original lawn was 7000sq ft. Product looks good, stands up to three dogs, and uses 30% less water. It still requires weekly mowing. Overall pleased but if you are looking for low mow try elsewhere.

I have used this in 2 ways. one is a monoculture path about 6'wide and 40' long. Seeded last fall. Still not thick enough to keep from being weedy. Plan to mow weeds, maybe spot treat and wait.the other way I have used is overseeing an older lawn. This looks promising. i actually sowed no mow grass with this as well. i think I will like this, but needs another year or 2 to mature.

3rd season and it has filled in nicely
'Low work and water' is just that once it has established itself. It takes a bit more work to prep/level the soil and re-seeding the lawn helps cover any bare areas. 3rd season and the lawn just gets better and better.

Love this stuff
had a bare spot where a swing set previously had been. Seeded about a 10X20 ft space. Really pleased with results.
