Buchloe dactyloides 'Prestige™' (Buffalo Grass) has fine soft blades with a stunning green color. It is moisture and humidity tolerant and outperforms all other varieties of buffalo grass in the southern and southeastern United States. 'Prestige™' Buffalo Grass has exceptional disease and insect resistance and a very low pollen rating.
'Prestige™' Buffalo Grass has a deep root system that extends 6 to 8 feet. It is an excellent choice for residential or commercial lawns and qualifies for LEED points for water efficient landscaping, as it uses only ¼” of water per week. Plugs will need regular watering to get established, particularly the first four weeks. Make sure to soak deeply during irrigation so the roots will grow deeply. More frequent irrigation will be required if establishing the grass in hot weather or sandy soils. In most areas, once established, the grass will not need supplemental watering.
'Prestige™' Buffalo Grass grows to a height of 4-6". While establishing the grass plugs, it is important to mow the area between 1 ½ to 3 inches to control weed growth. Once established, 'Prestige™' can be left un-mown during the summer season, if a natural look is desired. For a more manicured look, mow as frequently as desired. In early spring, mow to a height of 1”, which will allow the buffalo grass to green up earlier. In zones 6 or below, mow to a height of 2 to 2 ½ inches in late summer or early fall, in preparation for winter.
'Prestige™' Buffalo Grass was developed by University of Nebraska agronomists and released in 2003. One flat of 70 plugs spaced 12" x 12" apart covers 70 sq. ft. See Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet is provided with each order.
Please note: Our grass plugs ship separately from perennials and seed products. Orders for grass plugs get processed early Monday mornings for shipment that same week.
