Woody's Peach Surprise Hummingbird Trumpet (Zauschneria)

Zauschneria (Hummingbird Trumpet, California Fuchsia, Fire Chalice) a genus of western US native wildflowers known for their fiery orange/scarlet flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. Pink or coral-colored flowers are very rare. All colored flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds.

Preferred growing conditions:

• Plant in well-drained soil type but avoid clay. Position in a full sun location. Groundcover-type, Orange Carpet®, enjoys some afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Zauschneria seems to particularly like growing on hillsides or sloping beds to enhance winter drainage. Avoid planting in depressions that collect water.
• Mulch with gravel or pine needles. Zauschneria enjoy cool roots and sunny tops so mulching is very beneficial.
• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. These are xeric plants but don't like to be grown too dry. Weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is needed when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
• Deadheading is not needed.
• Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum

Special comments:

• Leave standing over the winter. Cut back to just above ground level in mid-spring.
• Zauschneria spread by underground roots and should be given room to spread. If they grow too wide for their space, dig suckers in early to mid-spring and replant.
• Watch for fleabeetles which can defoliate the plants in late spring/early summer.
