A hummingbird’s delight, Epilobium x 'Stardust' (Hummingbird Trumpet) is a pollinator magnet that puts on an extravagant display of small orange trumpet-shaped flowers, perfectly shaped for a hummingbird’s beak. Blooming from summer to fall, native cultivar ‘Stardust’ is a low-maintenance perennial that thrives in heat and is drought tolerant once established. It’s a perfect addition to a rock garden, xeriscape, or hellstrip where it can shine.
Epilobium x 'Stardust' (Hummingbird Trumpet) (formerly Zauschneria) has great presence in a border, rock garden, or native plant garden. Narrow-leaved green foliage is covered in tubular orange flowers from summer to fall, a long season of bloom that feeds hummingbirds and butterflies. Plant in a full sun location in average to poor soil with good drainage. Water regularly for the first two years, especially during a dry winter to establish this plant. Thereafter it is a very waterwise addition to the garden. Native to the west coast of North America and east to New Mexico, Epilobium (formerly Zauschneria) is found on dry slopes and ridges from sea level to high altitude.
Planting & Care
Zauschneria (Hummingbird Trumpet, California Fuchsia, Fire Chalice) a genus of western US native wildflowers known for their fiery orange/scarlet flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. Pink or coral-colored flowers are very rare. All colored flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds.
Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in well-drained soil type but avoid clay. Position in a full sun location. Groundcover-type, Orange Carpet, enjoys some afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Zauschneria seems to particularly like growing on hillsides or sloping beds to enhance winter drainage. Avoid planting in depressions that collect water.
Mulch with gravel or pine needles. Zauschneria enjoy cool roots and sunny tops so mulching is very beneficial.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. These are xeric plants but don't like to be grown too dry. Weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is needed when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
Deadheading is not needed.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum
Special comments:
Leave standing over the winter. Cut back to just above ground level in mid-spring.
Zauschneria spread by underground roots and should be given room to spread. If they grow too wide for their space, dig suckers in early to mid-spring and replant.
Watch for fleabeetles which can defoliate the plants in late spring/early summer.

Didn't bloom until Oct, but pretty flowers that are lasting
"I didn't like this plant at first because it grew very little and didn't bloom until Oct. Now it's covered in bright red blooms, and is still going strong even though the night time temps have gone down into the 30s. It's one of the few plants still looking nice in my yard. It's around 8 inches tall. I hope it blooms earlier next year so that the hummingbirds can get nectar from it. The hummingbirds have migrated."
