Description
5-8" tall x 12-15" wide. Phlox nana 'Perfect Pink' is without question, one of our finest western native perennials. While easily grown in the garden, the plant is almost never available because it's very difficult to propagate. " 'Perfect Pink' is a large flowered clone I've been growing in my garden for more than 25 years," said horticulturist David Salman. "I selected the original plant from the wild for its huge (1 ½" diameter) flowers with wide, deep pink petals that surround a small white eye." The plant grows as a tidy mound of stems with narrow, blue-green deciduous foliage. Blooming in late spring, it re-flowers in late summer in response to summer rain. Very long lived, it will gently sucker to make large cushions of glowing pink flowers. Native to northern TX and isolated portions of west TX and NM. 2024 Plant of the Year. 2013 Plant of the Year.

"The perennial phlox arrived in perfect condition and was even blooming. As it was described as pink blossoms, I had to inquire as to why mine were in shades of blue and lilac and was told that it goes through color change during blossom maturation. Okay. I have planted it with other Xeriscape plants from High Country around a desert willow in a new garden bed. A piece that broke off was treated as a propagation specimen and it did root! It seems to be a great plant for ground cover."
Performance dependant on precipitation
"I got these spring 2023 and the precipitation that year was well above normal with consistent moisture in the soil for most of the whole growing season. These bloomed basically non stop that year with the high moisture levels. They were unquestionably hardy with lows of -24° and actually stay mostly evergreen all winter here. One plant the above ground foliage actually was ripped out the ground by our 70mph winter winds we get here, and I was a little worried about it since they're normally evergreen, but the one that got ripped out actually ended up resprouting all around the original and became a much larger plant than the one that wasn't ripped out. It's second year we got way less moisture, and it still bloomed for maybe a month in the spring despite getting almost no precipitation, and then they looked kinda like crap for the summer, but I never once watered them. We then got about half of our precipitation for the whole year in August, and it responded with a really nice bloom again in late summer. I've seen these blooming at the local botanic gardens when mine aren't, so I think you can force blooms out of it all year with some supplemental irrigation, or you can just leave it like I do and let natural rains bring reblooms."

"Very happy with these plants. These were the 3rd variety of phlox I have tried in my infertile soil and they are doing GREAT (previous 2 not so much!). Ive planted them all along a border in front of a dwarf spruce and the brilliant pink flowers are fabulous. At only 3 months old they are putting out alot of flowers and add so much color to the garden. Very happy with them!"

"This is the third type of Phlox/creeper I have tried and finally SUCCESS! I bought 5 of these and when they arrived they looked a bit dried out and not very sturdy, but at 2 months they are all filling out and putting out lovely pink flowers. Have finally found a big bloomer for borders thats bright, easy to grow, seems to spread fast and is xeric. Perfect!"
This one took five years to get going
"This plant stalled out for a long time. After two years, I transplanted one plant to a rare full-sun spot in my yard. After three more years, it took off. This was a crazy Flagstaff winter; the plant spent several months under five-foot piles of shoveled snow. It might need more water and feeding than I was giving it. I just found the second five-year-old plant in its original partly shady location. It's got its own drip emitter, but it's about three inches tall with no flowers. Transplanting soon."

"This plant does bloom in spring, and from my experience it continues to bloom all summer if you deadhead it. Beautiful, radiant color that lasts months."
Really very hardy
"I ordered a second one this year after the first Phlox Nana did so well in summer heat and overwintered fine (zone 9 and we didn't have any hard freezes this last winter). The plant receives no morning sun, but afternoon and late afternoon sun and heat during a very hot summer last year. It is growing in a pot and kept blooming all summer into fall and never wilted or looked tired. Started blooming here in April this year."

"My plants arrived in great condition last fall. I had a few questions related to planting that were not covered in the directions. Specifically, I wanted to know if mulch was necessary. I used the online help feature and received a knowledgeable response. My 4 plants survived the winter and are green and growing well this spring. Too early for flowers, though I am very optimistic. Since I did not mulch, I am hopeful I may get a baby this season."
