USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
36" tall x 24" wide (cutting propagated). Originally an Arizona native, this selection comes to us from a Boulder, CO garden, where it has thrived in spite of many cold winters. Zauschneria puts on an extravagant display of red-orange flowers. It thrives planted in front of hot south and west facing walls and walks, in areas that might fry less heat loving plants. Plant in well-drained soil, not too much clay. Hummingbird Trumpet appreciates regular watering the first year or two, particularly during dry winters, to help get it well established. In colder areas (Zones 5-6), Z. arizonica is best planted in the spring through the late summer, not in the fall, as it needs hot weather to grow strong roots.

Planting Guides
Zauschneria (Hummingbird Trumpet, California Fuchsia, Fire Chalice) a genus of western US native wildflowers known for their fiery orange/scarlet flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. Pink or coral-colored flowers are very rare. All colored flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds.

Preferred growing conditions:
  • Plant in well-drained soils type but avoid clay. Position in a full sun location. Groundcover type, Orange Carpet®, enjoys some afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Zauschneria seem to particularly like growing on hillsides or sloping beds to enhanced winter drainage. Avoid planting in depressions that collect water.
  • Mulch with gravel or pine needles. Zauschneria enjoy cool roots and sunny tops so mulching is very beneficial.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. These are xeric plants but don't like to be grown too dry. Weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is needed when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
  • Deadheading is not needed.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum
  • Special comments:
  • Leave standing over the winter. Cut back to just above ground level in mid-spring.
  • Zauschneria spread by underground roots and should be given room to spread. If they grow too wide for their space, dig suckers in early to mid-spring and replant.
  • Watch for fleabeetles which can defoliate the plants in late spring/early summer.
