2. Prepare your soil by clearing the area of all existing growth.
3. Mix the Wildflower seeds with sand for better visibility.
4. After spreading the seed, we recommend compressing the seed into the soil.
5. After planting, give the area a good water.

only naturalizing a little

I love this plant and was hoping it would keep returning. The first year it was great and very healthy. Since then it is a bit puny and certainly not a big naturalizer. I am not giving up yet because I like it, but had hoped for more vigor

Slow to get started
By Christine's Garden
from Los Alamos, NM
I planted three mexican hats in April and then several more in May and June. The original three from April were slow to start with very few, semi-brown leaves. I doubted they would survive. By July, two of the three are about 12-14 inches tall and budding. The third is still small and lagging behind. The others are growing, but slowly. Water seems to be very critical in the first year to get them established.

A wonderful, easy plant
from Smith Valley, NV
A very colorful, drought tolerant, easy plant. Very long blooming season. The only downside is they are vulnerable to rabbit munching as young plants;fortunately, less so as they mature.
from Birmingham, AL
These plants did fairly well and we hope will be more vigorous this next season.

About Me Master Gardener
I planted one of these years ago and it never came back - I don't remember where I purchased it. I am in high hopes that this one will come back or reseed itself because I really like the plant. It will be worth using as an annual if it refuses to thrive as a perennial.
Blooming and spreading
Outside in an arid garden that gets a lot of sun and little moisture.

I bought this to use around my patio. Nothing bothers it, I have horrible winters and blistering summers, as well as rabbits the size of mountain lions. It comes back every year. Just be sure to deadhead it! It reseeds like rabbits as well...I now have this in my yard & in one of my gardens across the yard.

About Me Getting Started
Planted a cluster of three of these late May in the high desert - were growing and blooming almost immediately. Bloomed all summer and into the fall. No pests bothered. Hope we can enjoy again into their second year.

Great addition to my xeric garden
By Renee S
from Pendleton, OR
This is a great addition to my xeric garden and really brightens up my yard. It was a little slow to get started but is still green in mid-winter in Eastern Oregon.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
