Details

4-5' tall x 18" wide (division propagated). This beautiful selection of Switch Grass is valued for its red foliage. By mid-summer, the grass blades are colored green and tipped with red. In the fall the color intensifies as the entire plant turns a striking blend of reds and oranges. Comments about High Country Gardens Panicum virgatum Shenandoah:

I ordered 3 of these last May. First ones were dead upon arrival, but promptly replaced by customer service, who were great! However, the replacement plants never did well. After a full summer of being cared for and watered regularly, in a warm summer climate, they barely grew at all. I had to fight wild grasses sprouting up all around them, growing at 10x the rate these did. They did not produce a single seed head last year and did not show a lot of color at all. This spring, I do not see any green color come back, so I think they did not make it. I will wait a little longer, but as other plants and grasses have started to come up, I am not hopeful. These were not exactly cheap, and the plants sent were tiny, and not very healthy. Even the replacement plants were not great looking. Would not order this again. Poor value for money.

I love the fall color of this grass. Unfortunately, the rabbits love it so at least for now, it lives in a cage.

Comments about High Country Gardens Panicum virgatum Shenandoah:

This is the loveliest grass in my collection of grasses. I can hardly wait for the fall when its color is so spectacular. It is also provides interest in the winter -- provided the snow doesn't get too deep. I have recommended this grass to all who ask.

              Q & A

              Suggested Companion Plants:

              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
