Details

12-14" tall x 15-18" wide. Nepeta 'Select Blue' (Select Blue Catmint) was originally chosen for introduction because of its noticeably bluer flowers than is typical of most Nepeta. 'Select Blue' Catmint has become a cornerstone in many xeriscapes because of its cold hardiness, ease-of-cultivation, longevity and extended period of bloom. The first flush of flower comes in late spring. When deadheaded promptly, you will enjoy a second flush of blooms in late summer. Out of flower, the neat mound of foliage has a pleasing fragrance, texture, and gray-green color. Impervious to browsing animals, it grows easily in most soil types including clay. Is a sterile plant that will not reseed and make a weed of itself like other more common catmint. Cut back just above ground-level (about 3") in mid-spring. Shear off faded flowers in June to re-bloom. (Cutting propagated.)

Tips for Growing Catmint (Nepeta)

The Catmints (Nepeta) are some of our best garden perennials being long-lived, very easy-to-grow, resistant to browsing animals (deer and rabbits). Catmints are an excellent source of nectar for honeybees and butterflies and are a great beginner's perennial.

Many species are excellent in the xeric (low-water garden) and they grow well in a wide range of soil types, including dry clay. They grow well with at least a half day of sun, but flower best in full sun. We recommend planting only sterile hybrids and avoiding any Nepeta that are propagated from seed. The seed-grown Catmints can be aggressively weedy, spreading themselves throughout the garden and crowding out neighboring perennials.

The varieties we offer are outstanding, sterile (no seeds), long-blooming varieties:

  • Nepeta faassenii 'Select Blue' - This low growing, non-spreading plant has beautiful lavender-blue flowers. In early summer after the first flush of flowers have faded, shear off the flower spikes just above the foliage to get the plants to re-bloom again later in the summer.
  • Nepeta 'Walker's Low' - has showy deep blue flowers on tall flower spikes. 'Walker's Low' grows as a neat, non-suckering, well behaved plant and blooms for many months from late spring into mid-summer. Deadheading (shearing off the faded flower spikes just above the foliage) will encourage stronger re-blooming.

I bought this plant to make some old stumps more attractive. I planted them around the stump and I cannot believe how they have filled in around the stumps. I have grown this plant before and have had many compliments and comments wondering what the purple mass was that I had planted. Nepeta faassenii is very cold hardy in our zone 4/5, takes high winds and snow very well. This would be a great go to plant if you had a space that needed a plant that would grow and fill in quickly. The honey bees love it! Mine is planted in full sun and does really well in poor soil.

Comments about High Country Gardens Nepeta faassenii Select Blue:

I planted about 5 of these cat mints last spring. They all did well with very little care. However, I did not trim them back, as instructions said to do after 1st blooming, mostly because I had an injured arm. So they got more leggy and straggly than I would like. I'm not sure they bloomed quite as heavily as the photos show, but they were great for areas where little else would grow so easily. Next year I will be more diligent at trimming them back.

Planted these plants on a secondary sand dune in the mid-Atlantic coast (Maryland) and they did wonderfully!! I've never tried gardening on a sand dune before, so I was soooo pleased that they adapted to the rather harsh conditions. After deadheading, they bloomed again!

Comments about High Country Gardens Nepeta faassenii Select Blue:

I just received some Nepeta Blue in my pre planned garden kit. The starts a pretty full looking though it's hard to see what they will look like in bloom right now. I have to keep them under a milk crate right now to protect them from being eaten by roving cats that populate our neighborhood (and most areas, tbh). When it's time to plant I will need to find individual covers for each to give them a good start!
Other than that minor hiccup I think they look like they will hold up.

I planted my catmints in the fall in terrible Las Vegas soil with no supplementary water aside from me watering occasionally with a garden hose. The plants arrived small, but now that it's getting warm here, they are really starting to take off and flower. The flower color is a very pretty blue. The foliage is very attractive too, with a grayish blue tinge and tightly packed leaves. I'm using the catmint to soften the edges of my large patio area. So far, the catmint is turning out to be very hardy and it loves the sun.

We are first time high desert gardeners. We chose nepita blue to go near the house at the base of a tall grass. We get high filtered sun here under tall ponderosa pines. We added mulch to the sandy soil and are pleased with the plant's growth.

We expect it will do well through the el nino winter and are looking for growth and flowers next year. The plant arrived well packed and health and has thrived in its first season.

I garden in North Central Washington State where we have hot summers and cold winters. This catmint does great and comes back every year. The only possible problem is that it does spread by seed, which is great if you want more of them. If you don't, it's pretty easy to see the little plants coming up and just pull them. It also transplants fairly well.

It's not always easy to grow anything leafy in the hot desert of Southern Nevada, but this pretty plant is an exception. Grows and blooms with little effort as long as you water. And, those pesky rabbits don't eat it. I will be buying more next year.

This is a great plant for along a walkway. It spills out over the edge iof the stones softening the edges. It is very easy to grow. The color is beautiful and looks great with the Jupiters Beard also in the same bed. I intend to buy more of these because they do so well in my yard. Of course I will buy them from High Country Gardens. The plants arrive in great shape and grow and do well. I have been buying from you for years one have always been very happy with my plants

This is a hardy little plant. It is surviving in an area that does not have the best soil and does not get water on a regular basis. It has been walked on by the meter reader (I plan to move the plant as the guy continues to step on it though there is other space to walk.)

                                  Suggested Companion Plants:

                                  USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
