I planted many of these sunflowers on the side of my old house next to some planting beds and they were absolutely gorgeous every autumn without fail. We've since moved up to the mountains at 8k feet. While reading the reviews I hear they still do well at high altitude but someone said they had a problem with nibbling deer. We've got everything now. Deer, moose, rabbits, you name it. I think I'll try a couple to see how they do before committing to filling in a longer fence line. I highly recommend them if you have a large, sunny area to fill.

It sure is beautiful and the bees love it. However, if you have good conditions it will take over your whole garden. And its stems are hard to cut with a weedwacker. I would suggest that you keep them by themselves. Spectacular. Bee friendly. Drought resistant. Aggressive.

Comments about High Country Gardens Helianthus maximiliana Santa Fe:
The first year it grew 66" tall with thick and firm stalks that produced a plethora of sunshine blooms from the base to the top of the plant. This plant is a joy to see blooming in fall when most others are done with blooms.Strong and hardy, I just love this plant.

Beautiful and tough sunflower
from Fort Collins, CO
I planted this in one place, then in early August decided to move it to the other side of the yard and ripped the young plant out of the ground for the move. It suffered a lot of stress, but I cut back the dead foliage and it bounced back very nicely and still managed a great display of flowers on the chopped back portions. I can't wait to see what it'll do in a year that I don't interfere!

About Me Getting Started
Great plant! Located in an area with all-day, hot sun. Planted in late spring, and grew to over 6 feet tall by the end of the summer, covered with flowers. We get high winds in this area, and one of the plants snapped. Will probably stake them next summer.

lovely wild child
from Los Alamos, NM
I love this plant. It is unfailing. BUT it does want to take over. I bought two plants and one would have been more than enough for the corner I put it in. It leans way away from the house and I needed to tie it up to keep it straight and from covering up any plant in its way. It rules the space. Mine grew about 9 - 10 ft tall. Birds LOVE it and harvest the seed heads well into fall. I recommend it as long as it's placed in the proper place.

Planted this plant in early May. Even with our elevtion of 7000' by August it was full grown with multiple blooms. It's in encredible how fast this grew. People hiking the trail behind our house stop and ask the name of the plant & where we bought it. Love it!

I have been buying from High Country Gardens for the past 5 or 6 seasons and their plants are the BEST. The selection of xeric, easy to grow plants is the best I've ever found. I will continue to use their products to landscape my arid mountain garden!

Easy to care for and stunning display
from Erie, CO
I live near Denver, CO where we have temperature extremes in both summer and winter. Once established, this plant takes minimal care. It holds up well through hot, dry summers and in a milder summer with more rain and less heat, absolutely thrives. It does grow very tall and can get top heavy once it starts to bloom so I have found that it does better against a wall, fence or in a place protected by strong winds. It also blooms much better if it gets a full day of sun. It doesn't bloom until late summer but the display is absolutely amazing and worth the wait.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
