Why Plant Sempervivum?

Sempervivum is a hardy succulent cultivated for centuries as an easy-to-grow waterwise plant. They’re known as Hens and Chicks thanks to their tendency to produce smaller offspring, and Sempervivum means “always alive” in reference to its durable evergreen nature. Pointed leaves form an attractive spiral rosette, topped by bell-shaped blooms on the mother plant in summer. These hardy, low-maintenance perennials grow best in well-draining soil with full sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade in hot climates. Hens and Chicks have shallow roots and need little to no supplemental water or fertilizer. Plant in a xeriscape border or rock garden, between stepping stones, in a container, or to enhance a stone wall.
