(12-24" tall)
Petite, fire engine-red flowers are nicely spaced along the upright stems,
giving Scarlet Sage a delicate, airy feel that punctuates a garden or meadow
with brilliant color. Is the breeze causing the stems to gently sway, or is it
the activity of the hummingbirds, butterflies and bees called from afar to
savor the sweet nectar? Native to the Southeast US, Scarlet Sage is perennial
in zones 10 and 11 but happily grows as
an annual where temperatures drop below freezing. It reseeds easily, making it
ideal in a meadow planting or naturalized area where it can bloom all summer
long. It prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade and does best in
well-draining soil. Be sure to snip a handful of stems to add brilliance and
fragrance to a cut flower bouquet. You won't have to share the bounty with deer
— the plant is resistant to their browsing. Also known as Tropical Sage, Texas
Sage, Hummingbird Sage, Blood Sage, Red Sage and Indian Fire.
