The sweet scent and brilliant blooms of Scarlet Sage (Salvia coccinea) will summon hummingbirds, butterflies and bees from near and far. Plant Scarlet Sage seeds for long-lasting blooms from spring through fall, lovely for cut flowers. These deer resistant flowers readily self-sow, so you'll enjoy it year after year. At High Country Gardens, all seeds are non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Annual.
(12-24" tall)Petite, fire engine-red flowers are nicely spaced along the upright stems,
giving Scarlet Sage a delicate, airy feel that punctuates a garden or meadow
with brilliant color. Is the breeze causing the stems to gently sway, or is it
the activity of the hummingbirds, butterflies and bees called from afar to
savor the sweet nectar? Native to the Southeast US, Scarlet Sage is perennial
in zones 10 and 11but happily grows as
an annual where temperatures drop below freezing. It reseeds easily, making it
ideal in a meadow planting or naturalized area where it can bloom all summer
long. It prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade and does best in
well-draining soil. Be sure to snip a handful of stems to add brilliance and
fragrance to a cut flower bouquet. You won't have to share the bounty with deer
— the plant is resistant to their browsing. Also known as Tropical Sage, Texas
Sage, Hummingbird Sage, Blood Sage, Red Sage and Indian Fire.

Check for your last frost date and plant after this has passed. Choose a
spot on your property that gets 6 or more hours of direct sun a day unless you are planting seeds for shade.
Prepare your soil by clearing the area of all existing growth. Simply dig up everything that is growing, turn the soil and rake the area flat. If this is an area that has never before been gardened, you may need to till the area up to remove growth.
Mix the seeds with sand* for better visibility and scatter the seeds directly on top of the soil. If you are sowing a larger area, we recommend using a seed spreader; if not, you can sow by hand.
We recommend lightly compressing the seeds into the soil, making sure not to bury them. You can either walk on them, use a board or if you are sowing a larger area, rent a seed roller.
Water so that the soil is moist, not soaking wet, until the seedlings are about 4-6" tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. If you are experiencing very dry weather, we recommend watering occasionally.
