Famous for its stunning blue blooms, Texas Bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis) pairs beautifully with the vibrant red-orange hues of Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea). Plant this native seed combo in full sun for a season of jewel-tone flowers that attract plenty of pollinators. Deer resistant wildflowers will naturalize to offer more color each season. To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
(8-18" tall) There's more to this beautiful combination
of Texas Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush than meets the eye. Sure, the colors
look fabulous together, and they both enjoy a full sun site with well-drained
soil and bloom in late spring to early summer. Look deeper and you'll find that
these are true plant partners! Indian Paintbrush is a hemi-parasitic plant: It
grows best when its roots are in close proximity to a suitable partner. In this
case, the roots of an Indian Paintbrush plant will form an association with the
roots of a nearby Texas Bluebonnet plant and will draw off a portion of the
nutrients and moisture it needs to thrive, without harming the host bluebonnet.
Without a nearby host, Indian Paintbrush plants may survive, but their vigor
will slowly decline and they won't show their true splendor. What a fascinating
world takes place out of our view, beneath our feet! This duo attracts
hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, will naturalize to fill in a garden or
meadow area, and is deer-resistant.
