USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

Buchloe dactyloides 'UC Verde®' (Buffalo Grass) produces a dense turf of soft, bright-green, very fine leaf blades. It is excellent for the difficult to grow regions found in the lower elevations of the desert Southwest of Arizona and Southern and coastal California. 'UC Verde®' Buffalo Grass stays greener later in the fall and greens up earlier in the spring than other varieties recommended for this region.

'UC Verde®' Grass Plugs will grow to a maximum height of 4 to 8 inches in most locations. For those preferring a natural look, 'UC Verde®' need only be mowed once a season for maintaining vigor. For a more uniform, manicured effect, mow every 2-3 weeks.

A University of California 2003 introduction, the plant is sterile, does not produce seed and therefore is nearly pollen-free and beneficial for those who suffer from allergies to pollen.

'UC Verde®' only requires 1/4" of water per week and often needs no additional supplemental water once established. 'UC Verde®' qualifies for water rebates in many areas; check with your local water board. Please note that for the first four weeks, the plugs will need to be watered frequently to get the turf established, and supplemental water may be required for the remainder of the first season.

One flat of 70 plugs spaced 12" x 12" apart covers 70 sq. ft. See Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet are provided with each order. Watering will vary depending on the soil type. For clay soils, watering is less often than sandy soil which will require more watering due to the fast draining nature.

Please note: Our grass plugs ship separately from perennials and seed products. Orders for grass plugs get processed on Thursdays and shipped out the following Monday.
