USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
10" tall x 15" wide (seed propagated). Hundreds of soft pink flower clusters smother this plant in early spring; get close and you will enjoy its intensely sweet fragrance. The tiny leaves are evergreen, and are a distinctive powder . When finished blooming, cut back the old flowering stems to just above the new cluster of foliage at the base of the plant.
Plant in a lean, fast-draining soil, where Aethionema will spread by reseeding itself. Plant early-blooming, low-growing Veronica liwanensis or Alyssum 'Mountain Gold' to carpet the ground around it.

Planting Guides
Aethionema (Stonecress) is a genus of Old World perennials with evergreen foliage and fragrant pink flowers. Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Mulch with gravel.
Keep regularly watered for the first growing season to establish the roots. Infrequent but deep watering thereafter.
Deadhead after flowering to keep the foliage tidy.
Fertilize lightly in fall with Yum Yum Mix.
Special comments:
Evergreen foliage doesn't like to be cut back unless removing occasional winter killed branches.
