USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

It's vital that we value and protect our soil, a precious resource that is easily damaged, and that's why we created our Southwest Native Revegetation Seed Collection. Planting wildflowers will quickly cover bare soil to prevent compaction, invasion by weeds, erosion and loss of topsoil, and damage to soil life from unrelenting sun and heat. The five specially selected native plants in this collection grow well in hot, dry conditions, and will help to support the native bees, butterflies, and beneficial bugs. Lacy Phacelia is a legume that’s often used as a flowering cover crop, easily suppressing weeds and enriching soil. Fast-growing annuals provide color in the first season, and can self-sow for blooms in subsequent years. Deep-rooted perennials help stabilize soil and return year after year. Our High Country Gardens seed mixes contain 100% seed with no fillers, and all seeds are non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free, and guaranteed to grow.
