How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Green Santolina (Santolina rosmarinifolia) is an aromatic Mediterranean herb with evergreen foliage and a spray of yellow flowers in summer. This herb can be used in a knot garden or as a low hedge; If you have success with growing Lavender, your garden should be a good place to grow Santolina, which is also known as Lavender Cotton. Santolina was introduced in the US in the 1950s, and have since naturalized in some areas of California. It prefers sandy, rocky, lean soils, but is adaptable, and can also be planted in loam or clay, as long as it is well-drained, has plenty of sun, and lots of air circulation. Avoid planting in humid climates, or into unamended clay or rich garden loam. Water regularly to establish Santolina, but grow them on the dry side from the second growing season and beyond. It is fairly short-lived, about 3-5 years. Prune in the late winter or spring to prevent it from getting leggy or woody; it can be divided in spring or fall. Resinous foliage is completely deer and rabbit resistant, and highly resistant to pests - the foliage and flowers can also be used in sachets to keep away clothes moths. Other xeric companion plants that grow well with Santolina include Teucrium (Germander), Creeping Thyme (Thymus), and Rosemary (Rosmarinus).

"Tiny little plant but healthy. Looking forward to it growing into a nice showy plant."
"Like lavender, this plants emits a lovely fragrance when rubbed or bushed. Also very hardy. Stands up well to heat and humidity."
"I bought a lot of green Santolinas to replace overgrown Rosemarys in a mixed bed. They're doing great and look so good with my Lamb's Ears, Dusty Miller, and bluish purple Verbena. Definitely the right plant for the right spot. I was so happy that you had them because they're not commonly grown. They arrived so healthy last year and are looking great this year."
"Tha plants arrived in great condition. The packaging was solid and effective. The plants are small and fairly slow growing but that's fine. No complaints so far."
"I had a few of these Santolinas in my yard sourced by a prof. landscaper. 4 years later, I decided I need more, but my landscaper was not in business anymore, and no nursery in my area carried or would order that plant for me. (too small an order for them, I guess!) But High Country had the Santolinas! I received the 3 Santolina I ordered fast, planted them the next day: they are striving 3 weeks later. They are tiny compared to ones I have in my yard already, but then, had they been bigger, I am sure their transportation (and cost) would have been more problematic. As it is, all went easily and well, and I know that plant grows fast."
"Plants arrive 2022. Survived hardy winter and are producing the blooms. Just like in picture, just smaller. Awaiting while they growing taller!"
"I was looking for something evergreen for my high desert garden. I used the plant finder and this one came up so I decided to give it a try. I ordered in the fall and planted. The winter did not phase this plant at all. It is now spring, it is still a very pretty vibrant green and it is growing quite fast. I'm impressed."
