Description

18-24" tall x 24-30" wide. Color your garden with the dark blue calyxes and violet-blue corollas of Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead Violet’ (English Lavender). The foliage matures to a nice silver-gray and the fragrance is sweet but not strong. A bee favorite, our chief horticulturist, David Salman, discovered the plant as a chance seedling in a Santa Fe, NM garden. 'Munstead Violet' has the darkest colored flowers of any of the English lavender cultivars, making this High Country Gardens exclusive one of our favorite varieties.

Tips for Growing Lavender

Lavender are sun-loving plants that thrive in hot weather and grow best in arid climates. Lavender plants will be taller and wider in mild winter, hot summer climates. The same varieties when grown in cold (zone 5-6) winter climates tend to be more compact. Lavender plants require two-to-three growing seasons to reach mature size.

Lavender plants are at their best in the drier parts of the US like the Great Plains, Intermountain West and West Coast (which has a true Mediterranean climate (wet winters and dry summers). The key is to make sure you choose a variety with sufficient winter cold hardiness for your region. (‘Vera’ and ‘Pastor’s Pride’ are among the most cold hardy.) Yet with proper soil preparation, and planting site selection, Lavender can also thrive in moister, more humid climates like the Mid-West, East Coast and Mid-Atlantic states.

  • Plant in full sun with good air circulation.
  • Plant into well drained soil. Compost-enriched garden loam is alright in drier climates, sandy or gravel soil is best in moister climates. Heavy, poorly-drained clay soils will be fatal.
  • Select a raised or sloped bed, or a planting site against a hot wall or along a cement/asphalt walk or driveway where the reflected heat keeps growing conditions hotter and drier.
  • New transplants need regular watering. Don't let the plants get too dry. Supplemental watering can be greatly reduced the second growing season as the plants become established.
  • When using drip irrigation, place the emitter off to the side of the plant, not right on the root ball to avoid overwatering of mature plants.
  • Fertilize once annually in the fall with a top dressing of Yum Yum Mix.
  • Mulch with gravel or pine needles in arid climates. In moister climates mulching with gravel will protect the crown from excessive moisture and soil splashed onto the foliage.

"I've had so many (5+) English Lavender bushes die because Colorado has alkaline soil & the ones I bought were started at low altitude in acidic soil. "I ordered two Munstead Violet English lavender plants from HCG after seeing many spectacular plants last summer at the Santa Fe gardens. The two plants arrived in the fall, with one plant arriving damaged by the delivery service (through no fault of HCG; parcel delivery in this area from any of the majors is often poor at best). I notified HCG and they promptly sent a replacement lavender plant. Both plants are healthy and have done fabulously to date and importantly, they arrived as the variety of lavender that was advertised and that I ordered, which often does not occur when I purchase lavender from our big box nurseries. My plants look fantastic and I am optimistic that they will do better as they mature. Kudos to NCG."

I can't believe these survived

"I planted 3 of these in the Fall along a split rail fence with my neighbors house. They were small when they arrived, and didn't look like much. All winter my 55 lb dog has been running up and down the fence line trampling these plants, and I had assumed that they were dead. This spring, I installed an underground electric fence to keep my dog off this area, and to my surprise all 3 plants came back. I'm really impressed that these plants [1] survived a dry/cold Colorado Springs winter, and [2] survived intense dog foot traffic"
