18" tall x 15-18" wide. Brought down from the high elevations of South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains, this little Red Hot Poker is a colorful bloomer with great cold hardiness and a compact mature size. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).

Description

18" tall x 15-18" wide. Native to the high Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, this is one of the shortest, prettiest and most reliably cold-hardy species in the genus. I have found 'Fire Dance' to be much more compatible in smaller perennial plantings than its much larger relatives. Easily grown in average and compost-enriched garden soils. This is an improved cultivar with lovely coral-red and yellow bi-color flower spikes. Good for Firescaping (seed propagated).

Tips On Growing Kniphofia  (Red Hot Poker)

Kniphofia  (Red Hot Poker) is a genus of showy perennials native to southern Africa, with most species found in the Republic of South Africa.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Red Hot Pokers thrive in a wide range of soils including clay. Plant them in full sun.
  • Mulch with common mulching materials in arid climates.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plants. Once established, they only need occasional deep soaking in hot, dry weather.
  • Deadhead the plants after blooming to keep the plants looking tidy, but they generally will not come back into bloom.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.

Special comments:

  • These perennials are highly attractive to hummingbirds.
  • Kniphofia will re-seed themselves and should be deadheaded if volunteer plants are not wanted.
  • Plants are easily divided in early to mid-spring if they get too large for their space, or if new plants are needed.

Great plant BUT not in Colorado zone 5B

"Just fyi fellow Colorado gardeners: I have tried these for the last 3 summers. Plants arrived safely and looked hearty. First summer: plant died (had it in a container - overwatering? underwatering? not sure). Second summer: ordered 3 and put in ground -- all 3 died (I think the voles got them). Third summer: Put in a container again. It was doing well and sent up one nice flower BUT deer ate the flower. So sad. The flowers are really pretty but they must be super delicious for the deer. I am giving up on this plant. Still rating as 5-star, but this plant does not seem right for my particular conditions."
