Great grass but it needs lots of sun

"We planted this last year in May (northern CA) and it grew in well except for some areas that had less sun. We were advised at least 6 hrs of sun a day. Second year with fertilizer and regular water the bald spots are mostly grown in. I will still need to plant a few more plugs. On the other hand, the grass is a beautiful green and the cats love to plop on their stomachs and relax like a pillow. It is easy to care for except for the shaded areas."

once it filled in it is great

"I live in the desert in California in zone 8. It took a while to get set in (purchased in late summer, they couldn't ship until it cooled off and of course it went from 90 to 50 in a week). So I battled invasive mustard with it all winter and spring. But once it filled out it is low maintenance and low water. If you buy it buy the polymer stuff, soil moist, at the same time. It was recommended in the instructions and I could find none in town and didn't know when I ordered the grass to order it. I ended up using orbees. . . . Same stuff."

So far so good

"Planted as plugs on 6"" spacing. They started slow but really took off when it started getting hot. My fescue lawn is looking rough as the temp creeps up in the 80s, but the buffalo grass patch is looking very green and vibrant"

Awesome for between flagstone

"Installation tip: stab the dirt with about a 4' length of 3/4"" irrigation pipe. It pulls out about the right amount of dirt for a grass plug. Tap the pipe on the ground to release the dirt. Repeat. This is my second go-round installing CA Buffalograss between my flagstones. My first attempt was last summer. Initially, they did great. I had a lot of space between the plugs, but they were very happy. I can absolutely say that even hardy, waterwise plants die when you forget to water them in high summer. Even then, about a third survived. I had to replace some of the stones and redo the area, so this year I ordered two flats, there is hardly any empty space left, and I moved potted plants (and their automated irrigation overflow) to the flagstones for this summer. I do need to trim stolons that span the stones before parties, but it's not too hard, and I love the results now that the plugs are established enough to not come out when I yank on the stolons. Eventually I expect the weed whacker will help with that, or maybe the reel mower."

Zone 7??

"Nice, but didn't work for me. Location: eastern Washington. Zone 7a. Typically get a couple weeks in the teens, sometimes down to 0F in winter. Usually not much snow. Quite a few 100+ days in summer with virtually no rain. Use: stabilize a sandy, south facing hillside with no shade. The only things that grow here are goat head weeds and kochia weeds. Shipping was quick and plugs looked really nice - extensive roots and lush green blades of grass. I was expecting ""grosser"" looking grass, but this is a beautiful, soft turf. It took me about a week to get everything in the ground (limited planting time after work, before it got dark). The last few plugs that got planted looked bad, but perked right up once planted and watered. I'd say 72/72 survived, which is awesome quality. I babied these all summer. They got plenty of water and 1 small dose of fertilizer in late July . They were sending out runners and growing like crazy. I spent hours hand-weeding because I couldn't find anywhere if it was safe to use 2,4-D or preen on these. They went dormant in the early fall due to an early cold snap. Started to green up a little bit in May, then slowly faded and died by July (past the 12 month replacement this company offers). I'm pretty sure these can't handle a bad zone 7 winter, which is a bummer because this seems like a great product. I've read elsewhere that zone 7 is inappropriate for the uc Verde type and wonder if this should be changed in the description. If I lived somewhere warmer I'm pretty sure this would be a 5-star product. If your climate sounds like mine, maybe consider legacy or prestige buffalo grass? I'm considering giving one of them a chance. I'll also say I wouldn't hesitate to buy from this company again, as the plugs really did seem nice."

Great no mow, low water solution!

"Wanted to put in a lawn in drought ridden CA. This grass filled in quickly and looks great. We let it go for the meadow look and it's not too long at all. We have some weird 'height patchiness' but I think that's due to there being extensive mole issue shortly after planting. We love it, and so do our dog and toddler."

Quality plants!

"I was skeptical about ordering plugs as some companies do not let roots establish before marketing but these were fantastic. Every single plug had well established roots. The plants came promptly and were in great condition! I won't hesitate to order plants from High Country Gardens again!"

So happy with my Buffalo grass

"Planted at the end of last summer and it took a while for the grass to get going in the spring—the weeds were out-competing the grass. And it took a lot of time to weed it all again. But my lawn now (August of the next year) is filled in and beautiful! Next time I plant Buffalo grass, I will do it in the spring, hoping to reduce the weeding."

Works even me

"Quite surprised that this took off as readily as it did. If I can do it anyone can. I followed the advice of everyone contributing on high country gardens. Just ordered two more flats, might get more for the front yard"
