Description

Sporobolus heterolepis (Prairie Dropseed Grass) is widely considered to be one of our finest native grass species. Wide ranging in nature, it's found across nearly two thirds of the US.  Well adapted to a wide variety of growing conditions and soil types (including clay), the fine textured grass blades make this clumping grass exceeding graceful and in constant motion with even the slightest breeze.  The showy see-through flowering seed heads appear in late summer and hold beautifully through the winter.  And seed-eating songbirds seek out this grass for food.  Sporobolus also has golden fall color; an outstanding grass with four seasons of ornamental interest.  Plant with other prairie wildflowers like Prairie Sage (Salvia azurea), Goldenrod (Solidago), Blazing Star (Liatris) and Little Blue Stem (Schizachrium).
