Description

15-18" tall x 4-6' wide. Banana Yucca (Yucca baccata) is a handsome species with rosettes of thick, stout olive-green leaves and big spikes of showy ivory flowers in late spring. A widespread species ranging from west TX through NM, CO, UT, AZ, NV and into southern CA, it is very cold hardy and well-adapted for waterwise landscapes (xeriscapes). Give it room, as it will form wide-spreading colonies of stems. The large, banana-like fruits are readily fed upon by songbirds that eat the sweet, fleshy "skin" surrounding the seeds. Flower spikes may rise 2-3 feet above the main plant.
